Why soft skills are important

You may have come across the term soft skills when looking for a new job or at an interview. Many employers consider them important and often crucial. The advantage is that these skills do not need to be specifically taught and are not related to qualifications or expertise. You just need to develop them.

What are soft skills?

Soft skills are abilities or qualities that are naturally given to you. They are not related to what school you graduated from or what knowledge you have. They are associated with a person’s personality, empathy and emotional intelligence. In practice, this means only one thing. If you want your soft skills to be better, you don’t need to learn anything. Just develop them and work on them.

At first glance, it may seem that this type of skill is not important for the job. But the opposite is true. Nowadays they are much more in demand than ever before. Unlike hard skills that you have learned, soft skills cannot be replaced by automation. Employers look for people with a good level of soft skills because they are the ones that make a company grow.

What soft skills are employers looking for?

In most cases, employers are looking for a person suitable for career development, i.e. an employee for several years or for life. Therefore, they want a person with not only a lot of technical skills, but also a portfolio of soft skills. The employee must be able to work with teammates, clients and customers. They must be interested in the job and should be motivated to achieve goals.

Soft skills need to be continuously improved and soft skills courses can help you
There are many ways to improve your soft skills.

The most in-demand soft skills on the labour market:

  • Communication – the ability to communicate is one of the most desirable qualities. It allows you to react quickly, solve problems and adapt to the situation. In addition, you will be able to get along better with people, which you can use, for example, when approaching a potential customer with the intention of persuading them to buy your company’s products or services. Communication is also linked to listening skills, which are also highly valued in the labour market.
  • People management – the ability to lead people and motivate them in a certain way is especially important for leadership positions and during teamwork. In addition to inspiring colleagues, you can plan time and tasks effectively. Decisiveness is also often associated with this skill.
  • Self-motivation – in order to achieve all your goals, you need to be able to motivate yourself. If you can do that, you’re that much closer to your dream job. Every company needs an employee with vision and high goals.
  • Responsibility – when you get a job, you are given a lot of responsibility, not only for yourself, but also for the company you work for. Discipline and precision, which are also in high demand, are connected with responsibility.
  • Teamwork and flexibility at work – working in a team is more challenging than working as an individual. Getting along with other people, motivating them and advising them costs energy and strength. If you know how to do that, you are a very valuable employee.
  • Problem solving – sometimes it takes hours or days to reach a goal and an agreement in a conflict. If you can solve a problem in minutes and keep calm, employers will fight over you.
  • Ability to work under pressure – some jobs are known for their amount of work and relentless deadlines. In others, you’ll rarely encounter pressure and stress. No matter what your job is, if you can handle a heavy workload, you are a great asset.
  • Good time management – you need to plan your individual work tasks so that you can complete them by the deadline. Companies don’t need someone who forgets and constantly puts off work.
  • Analytical thinking – this is a specific way of thinking. It allows you to gather information and make the right decision. Choosing the right solution in a particular situation or choosing correctly from several options is challenging. Employers know this, which is why candidates with an analytical mindset are rare and extremely beneficial to them.
  • Creative thinking – this type of soft skill is especially useful if you work in a creative industry. Original ideas and interesting thoughts can move you closer to your goals.

How improve soft skills

Soft skills are your secret weapon, so you should keep improving them. This will be appreciated not only by your current or future employers, colleagues and clients, but especially by you. Actively developing these qualities will also be reflected in your private life, which you will be able to see in your communication with others or in your approach to everyday problems.

The way to improve soft skills mainly depends on what skill you want to strengthen. Each skill will require a different approach, but there are some general guidelines that can be applied to all soft skills.

Find out what you’re good at

Every person has strengths and weaknesses. You are better at some things and worse at others. Instead of focusing on something you’re not good at, do the exact opposite. Find out what you enjoy and feel good about. If you don’t know what it could be, ask around. Your friends and acquaintances can certainly help you with this.

Write down your soft skills and start working on them gradually. If you’re good at time management, learn some time-saving tricks, what planning methods exist and what tools can be used. The same applies to other skills, such as analytical and creative thinking or the ability to work under pressure. Everything can be improved.

Focus on the soft skills you're good at
Improving soft skills can be fun.

Get feedback

Even though it would help in many areas, one cannot critically evaluate oneself. Of course, one knows their shortcomings and weaknesses, but they overlook some things. That’s why it’s a good idea to ask for feedback, preferably from a person who works in the same field as you. It should be someone who has more experience or has been in the industry for a longer period of time.

Another option may be a friend or family member. However, the problem here is that the person close to you is usually not as critical and objective as they should be. Many weak points are overlooked. So try to go to someone who can give you a realistic and sober view.

Try online courses and books

Soft skills books or articles with tips and advice can help you develop your skills. Soft skills courses and trainings can help you too, and you can find a lot of them on the Internet. Some are free, for others you need to pay. It’s up to you which option you choose. Theoretical skills development is good, but also focus on practical skills development, which is key to broadening your scope.

Step out of your comfort zone

Usually, you show your soft skills especially among your family and friends. It’s about people you feel comfortable with. In the comfort zone, you are neither tense nor stressed. However, you won’t have such an environment at work, and this is especially true if you’re planning to change jobs or are just starting out in a new one.

This is exactly why you should step out of your comfort zone and start working on skills outside of it. Get into an environment you don’t naturally gravitate towards. If you’re an introvert, try a team activity. If you’re more of a team player, choose a job for an individual.

The more often you step outside your comfort zone, the better equipped you will be to handle major changes. You will learn to draw on your strengths in situations that would otherwise make you feel silent or uncomfortable.

Think about your actions

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s almost impossible to find time for yourself. So take a 5-10 minute break after finishing a project or meeting. Evaluate what you think you did right and wrong. Go over your reactions and how you resolve conflicts. Find out if you did what you wanted to do or if something held you back.

Self-reflection is not about being hard on yourself and beating yourself up for making the wrong choices. Its job is to teach you something new and move you forward. Knowing where you went wrong makes it easier to avoid it in the future. With a few minutes to evaluate your work performance, you will gain a lot of information about yourself. Sometimes you get interesting insights.

Soft skills will improve with self-reflection and courses can also help.

Observe others and actively listen

One of the best ways to boost your soft skills is to watch others. It could be your superiors, your subordinates or your colleagues. Find out how they perform their tasks, if they have any individual processes and what they are good at. Take inspiration from people in your neighbourhood.

In addition to observing, also actively listen. Focus on what others are saying, not only to respond, but also to learn something new. Active listening does not necessarily mean that you agree with the person. It can also be the exact opposite. By listening, you show that you understand their point of view, but your beliefs are different.

Communicate constantly

Interpersonal communication is the key to resolving many problems and disputes. If you know what to say at the right time or in the right situation, you’ve won. However, even the best speakers had to build their skills. In addition to reading, regular communication will help you expand your vocabulary. Talk to different people and on different topics. Even the ones you don’t enjoy. This gives you a general overview, which is another important skill.

Definitely don’t underestimate soft skills

Soft skills have a multitude of benefits. The main one is that employers value them much more than the professional and learned ones. But don’t be fooled. Even naturally acquired qualities need to be constantly developed and improved. You can do this in a number of ways, from reading books to self-reflection. Choose one or more options and kick-start your career with job offers at msg life Slovakia.

Help Ukraine: we have contributed financially and materially to the humanitarian collection

Thanks to the collection for aid to Ukraine we bought food, baby food, sleeping bags and toiletries.

Many of us cannot imagine the situation in our neighbours until we see images from the war-affected towns or interviews with those whose lives are most affected by the military conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Every day, more and more people flee Ukraine, fearing for their lives and hoping to find refuge beyond the borders of their home. At msg life Slovakia, we are therefore striving to help by purchasing hygiene products, basic non-perishable foods and other essentials for those who need it most right now.

In an effort to support Ukrainians, our colleagues have come together to show once again that we work as one team. We, as msg insur:it, want to do our part. This year, we have therefore decided to give our entire annual profit-based contribution, which is set out in msg life’s corporate strategy, to charities that provide direct help to the victims of this terrible invasion of Ukraine. Dear colleagues, thanks to your excellent work and our strongest earnings to date, we are able to donate 175,000 euros on your behalf to two organisations that provide desperately needed help to people in need. In addition to financial assistance, we have also decided to make a material contribution. That is why we at msg life Slovakia have organized a collection to help the people of Ukraine. In less than two weeks, together with our colleagues, we managed to raise enough funds to purchase non-perishable food, basic hygiene items and other essentials such as blankets, baby blankets, sleeping bags and pads. We purchased basic non-perishable food, coffee, tea, instant meals, baby formula, infant milk, baby food pouches, hygiene items such as diapers, toilet paper, toothpaste and toothbrushes, soaps and disinfectants as well as handy emergency first aid kits and basic medicines.

The employees of msg life Slovakia took part in the collection

Our colleagues also decided to help and brought a lot of things personally, for which we are extremely grateful. In total, an incredible three pallets of material essentials were collected. We then handed over the entire collection to the Bratislava’s Charity, which sent part of the things to help people affected by the military conflict and the other part to Ukrainians coming to Slovakia. We hope that the situation beyond our borders will soon improve and that our donations, whether financial or material, will help those who need it most now and who find themselves homeless. We sympathize with the Ukrainian people and we are determined to help. Together we are helping Ukraine!

How to find a job through LinkedIn? Complete your profile to the fullest

In the last part of our series on the LinkedIn platform, we discussed why it’s important to be active on LinkedIn as a user. There are a few steps you can take to ensure your success and effectively present your personal brand on this platform.

One of them is a properly completed personal profile. Your dream job (check our latest job offers) may suddenly be within your reach, as many Czech and Slovak recruiters are now active on this social network. This also creates an excellent opportunity to search for a job on LinkedIn.

How to find a job on LinkedIn

The LinkedIn platform is an excellent tool for job hunting. It can help you find potential employers in your field, as well as specific LinkedIn job offers from top companies on LinkedIn. In this article, we’re going to give you some tips and tricks on how to work with LinkedIn profile marketing and find a job through the LinkedIn platform..
A user’s LinkedIn profile is divided into several sections – the header, profile, summary, work experience, education, and even recommendations or references from employers and colleagues. If you fill out your profile completely, LinkedIn will mark it with a virtual “All-Star” badge (a label for top profiles). This means, among other things, that you’ll be more visible to other users.

We believe you already understand what LinkedIn is, you’ve completed your LinkedIn registration, and you know how to use LinkedIn. So let’s go over how you should fill out each section of your profile.

LinkedIn personal profile header

This includes your name, your LinkedIn profile photo, a cover photo (also known as a LinkedIn background image) and a motto in the form of LinkedIn profile tagline. Always include your name on LinkedIn without titles, whether academic or of nobility. This is because titles are not commonly used abroad, especially in online presentations. This practice is not unique to LinkedIn. It is the carefully completed profile information that will ultimately speak volumes about your qualities.

Recommend
We recommend:

…create a LinkedIn cover photo.
At least 60 percent of your LinkedIn profile photo should be filled with your face, so everyone can see who they’re actually interacting with. Fill the rest of the space with a neutral background in the form of a marketing LinkedIn cover photo, i.e. an image that complements your profile appropriately.

Many users don’t upload a photo to their LinkedIn profile. This is a shame for many reasons; for example, a potential visitor to your profile will not be able to match your name to your face. Your LinkedIn profile photo therefore forms the basis of your personal presentation.
So if you decide to have one, choose it according to your target group and how you want to present yourself. Avoid selfies taken on holiday or in bars.
The LinkedIn cover photo is the introductory photo that completes the visual aspect of your work profile, so it is best to include a photo taken in a professional setting. For example, this could be a snapshot that at first glance is related to your profession or a summary of what you do. You can also find inspiration in the ‘Professional LinkedIn Profile Photo‘ article on LinkedIn itself.

Did you know that…

… can you also upload a LinkedIn profile video?
If you want to upload a LinkedIn profile photo and follow proper profile marketing, choose the optimal photo resolution of 400×400 pixels. Larger sizes are also fine, but it is recommended to stick to the maximum size of 8MB.

Let’s take a closer look at your LinkedIn headline – the line just below your name, also known as your LinkedIn motto. This term often leads to a misunderstanding of its true purpose. The headline is not the place for your favorite ancient quote or life wisdom. Its actual purpose is simple: to summarize your expertise and skills in just a few words. For example, if you work in copywriting, your headline could be something like: “Creative writing lecturer crafting stories that give your brand a voice.”

So how do you find a job through LinkedIn — or use LinkedIn effectively?

One key section lies just below your headline: the About section. Here, you have exactly 2,000 characters to briefly and convincingly present your experience, achievements, and strengths. Be authentic and specific. If you’re a programmer, mention how many years of experience you have, name interesting projects you’ve worked on, and include any relevant coding tips on courses or certifications you’ve completed. Avoid empty phrases, overused clichés, or generic buzzwords. This is your chance to stand out from the crowd.

Work experience

In this section, also known as the LinkedIn résumé, list your work experience in retrospective order. For each job, fill in the job title — for example, if your profession is Java developer. Also include the type of employment, the name of the employer, and the location.
An integral part should be a job description of the position you held in your previous job. Again, briefly describe what your responsibilities were, what you were in charge of, or what you achieved. For clarity, we recommend writing your experience in bullet points. You can also add external documents, photos, videos, presentations, or links.

Education

Another section, this time focused exclusively on your education. Include the name of the school and the fields of study, academic degrees obtained, and possibly additional information about your studies (length of study, volunteer activities, and so on). Don’t be afraid to also share your exam results, completed projects, or other achievements.

All-Star profile

Let’s now follow up on the mention of the All-Star rating from the beginning of the article, which LinkedIn assigns to well-filled-out and properly managed profiles.

To receive this rating, just follow the platform’s built-in guide, which offers tips and recommendations on what still needs to be completed on your profile.

However, you definitely shouldn’t miss having a properly filled-out name, headline (motto or LinkedIn profile slogan), location and industry, a quality profile photo (also referred to as a LinkedIn profile photo), and at least two listed work experiences. At the same time, you need to be connected with at least 50 other users. If you manage to earn the All-Star profile rating, besides a good feeling, you can also enjoy the fact that the LinkedIn algorithm favours these profiles, giving their posts greater reach. You’ll simply become more visible on LinkedIn.

Analytical thinking increases the chance of career advancement

Find out what analytical thinking is and how you can advance your career thanks to it.

Analytical thinking is related to the ability to gather and evaluate information, solve problems and make decisions. Employees who have this skill can quickly identify a problem, propose a solution and improve overall productivity and success in a team or company. Job candidates with strong analytical judgment are therefore attractive to employers.

In people with a strong analytical mindset, the left hemisphere dominates, which is responsible for logic and the dominance of “reason” over the senses. Analytically minded people do not give in to their emotions and often work in jobs such as programmer, statistician or notary. However, in case you don’t have analytics in your genes, there are ways to improve it.

What is actually analytical thinking?

Analytical skills are used in brainstorming, observing, interpreting data, integrating new information, theorizing, and making decisions based on multiple available factors and options. Employers often prefer employees with the ability to research a problem and find an effective solution. Solutions can be achieved through clear, methodical approaches or creative techniques. This can also impact your career growth. So, with analytical skills, you approach problems rationally and use logical judgement rather than your emotions to make decisions. People with a strong analytical mindset approach situations impersonally and with a certain distance. This is what makes their final decision objective, which is perceived as extremely positive by employers, especially in stressful work environments or for important projects.

An example of how analytical thinking works in practice

Example: a customer (insurance company) came to us after CR-close (deadline for submitting requests for the next software delivery) with a new CR (change request). They specified this request so that the change could be deployed to production within the defined deadline. The request was a new interface (batch) to automate the reporting of the insured people in the divorce process. This new functionality was to be able to identify relevant policyholders in the database and extract the divorce and property details of the policyholder so that the insurer could report them to another institution via a generated file.

Creating a batch is always a complex and time-consuming task. Based on the customer requirement, a new process diagram is modelled and within it, logically interdependent rules are defined that serve as the basis for implementation. The first step was to develop a cost estimate, which we specify in PT (man-days). However, we had no chance to deliver in the required quality in the next software delivery. Since we had the divorce process implemented and implementable through a GUI (Graphical User Interface), it occurred to me to try to include the creation of the newly required file in the process.

Instead of new functionality for automated file creation via batch, the application would add a new field to the existing distribution process that would serve as a trigger to generate the required file for a given policyholder. After discussion with development again, this solution proved to be feasible and was agreed to by the customer.

Consequently, it was necessary to pre-prioritize the CRs that were to be included in the next software delivery. We evaluated that if we moved the two smaller requirements to a later date, we could handle this requirement instead in the current delivery. In the end, the customer was satisfied because they could put the change into production within the statutory timeframe. Thus, in solving the problem, we analyzed the reality of the situation based on observation and evaluation of all relevant factors and assessed the feasibility of the requirement itself. We had to change and adapt our strategy several times in order to satisfy the client in putting the change into production within the statutory deadline. But in the end, we figured out a way to meet all the requirements and deliver a result that the client was happy with. And all of this only through analytical thinking.

Types of analytical skills

Few people have a strongly developed analytical mind, but everyone has some analytical skills. As part of the job application process, you need to highlight specific analytical skills on your CV, depending on the position you are applying for. You should definitely mention these five skills in case they are characteristic of you. In fact, it is their inclusion that may determine your future employment.

Communication

As they say, communication is the basis of everything. In work, but also in everyday life, it is therefore essential to be an effective communicator in order to be able to discuss one’s own ideas and suggestions, together with conclusions and recommendations. You will appear more confident in front of your employer, who will also get the impression that you are confident in your decisions, which will increase your value in the work team and your worth on the job market. Analytical communication skills include:

  • active listening,
  • survey,
  • teamwork,
  • oral communication,
  • written communication,
  • presentation skills.

So these are fairly common abilities that you may not even have known were related to analytical thinking. Think about how you manage working in a team. Do you find it difficult to present ideas in front of colleagues or do you have a habit of jumping in, not giving them your full attention or reacting passive-aggressively? By analysing your strengths and weaknesses, you will be able to evaluate your analytical communication skills and use them to your advantage.

Creativity

Analyzing information often requires a creative and skilled eye with the ability to spot and detect subtle details or trends in data that others may not see. But creativity is also important in problem solving. An employee with strong analytical skills will think outside the box, resulting in the ability to come up with effective and original solutions. This makes them an invaluable part of the work team. Creative skills include:

  • brainstorming,
  • budgeting,
  • cooperation,
  • optimization,
  • predictive modelling,
  • restructuring,
  • strategic planning,
  • integration.

However, the current times have a negative impact on the creativity of employees. They are often under a lot of pressure to come up with new and innovative solutions and ideas, which over time takes a toll on their mental health. Not only do they have to deal with stress, but many times also with burnout syndrome. However, at our company, the health of our employees comes first and we treat each team member individually and humanely.

Creativity and analytical thinking are related.

Critical thinking

Critical thinking is related to evaluating information and then making decisions based on specific findings. This analytical ability greatly helps in solving the problems of the society. An employee who approaches a situation critically becomes a valuable member of the team because of his or her ability to objectively and factually assess as well as evaluate the problem and propose an adequate solution. Critical thinking includes:

  • process control,
  • auditing,
  • benchmarking,
  • big data analysis,
  • business intelligence,
  • causal relationships,
  • comparative analysis,
  • correlation,
  • decision-making,
  • inductive reasoning,
  • interpretation of data,
  • setting priorities,
  • problem solving.

Data analysis

In the context of analytical thinking, we can’t forget about data analysis. This is the process of breaking down a complex problem into its individual parts. It means that you pay attention to specific data in an effort to better and more accurately evaluate the situation and therefore the desired effective solution to the problem. There are many different types of data analysis, but the most common ones you will encounter in a work environment are:

  • business analysis,
  • strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis,
  • cost analysis,
  • critical analysis,
  • descriptive analysis,
  • financial analysis,
  • predictive analysis,
  • process analysis,
  • qualitative and quantitative analysis,
  • ROI analysis.

Research

The ability to collect data and research a particular topic is also a fundamental analytical skill. This includes online research, data gathering and competitive intelligence. Analytical research skills include collecting metrics, data, setting priorities or checking for accuracy.

How to highlight your analytical thinking?

Analytical thinking is appreciated by many employers, so it’s best to emphasise this skill when applying for a job. List your analytical skills with a specific example of where you have used them. Your skills may come from previous work experience, volunteering or school. Focus on what you are good at and show why you would be a great asset to the work team.

Tips on how to improve analytical thinking and skills

Being analytical gives you more detailed information about the topic and helps you make more rational decisions. Employers want to see that you can not only gather information, but also articulate it and solve complex problems. We can advise you on how to improve both your analytical thinking and your skills.

1. Read more

An important part of analytical activity involves vigilance and constant stimulation. Regular reading can keep your mind active, make your brain think in new ways, and encourage you to look at the issues in the book differently.

2. Build your math skills

The math involves solving the equation step by step to get the correct answer. All forms of math are logical, so honing your math skills is a great way to improve your analytical thinking and abilities. Practice different types of math problems to help you build your logic and problem solving skills.

3. Play games that boost your cognitive abilities

Games like this challenge you to think deeply and logically. Although they are mostly perceived as fun, this type of game is a common and preferred method used to hone analytical skills. A great example is playing sudoku, board games or doing crossword puzzles.

4. Learn something new

Expanding the skills and knowledge you have acquired so far can also improve your analytical thinking or skills. The more you learn, the more information and methods you can use to solve problems and analyse situations. Many people become passive learners after completing the required education. Strengthen your cognitive skills by learning something new every day – something that interests you, or get better at an activity you are passionate about. You can also take an online course in a subject you don’t know and are intrigued by, or learn a new foreign language. This will also help you to expand your knowledge in areas you didn’t know before and make you a little bit smarter again. (As part of our employee benefits, we also support colleagues’ growth through language courses.)

Did you know that…

Can regular exercise improve cognitive abilities? When it comes to exercise classes, being able to remember the next steps in an exercise routine is a great way to develop your analytical skills. Knowing a particular sequence enables you to concentrate on the task at hand while preparing you better for what comes next.

5.
Buď pozornejší a vnímavejší

Paying attention to detail and being more perceptive of your surroundings is a great way to improve your analytical thinking and skills. This aspect allows you to understand how certain things work and interact. Engaging your sensory perceptions as well as actively participating in the world around you will help you improve your analytical skills. A very small thing can also be helpful. Try observing birds and their interactions, or consider the multiple connections and patterns taking place in the outside world. Paying more attention to the small, seemingly unimportant details in your life will help you in your working life.

6. Join the discussion club

Working in a group environment allows you to meet other people and discuss ideas, problems and other situations. Understanding how others process information and interpret their surroundings will greatly help you to guide your own world view and develop your analytical thinking and skills.

7. Write down your experiences in a diary

Regularly recording the events of your day in a journal gives you time to reflect on yourself. When things don’t go according to plan, you can learn from those mistakes. This is because much of the analysis involves trial and error. Keeping a diary helps you to apply the knowledge you’ve gained to current problems and improve your thinking and analytical skills when considering the future.

Although experience is the best teacher, everything takes time. Finding a mentor to guide you in the right direction will be of immense help as you move forward. They will show you the difference between mediocrity and greatness in your professional life.

8. Často sa pýtaj

When someone asks a question, they often ask for an explanation so that they can better understand the issue. Expressing curiosity provides different perspectives and allows you to compare your own opinion with someone else’s. Sometimes common questions will lead us to a different answer than originally expected. This is a common condition in any situation, and especially in problem solving, as your brain becomes more actively wired to think more analytically.

9. Download apps

While not all apps can help improve your analytical skills, many are helpful in this regard. Logging what you eat each day via a mobile app allows you to track and analyse your daily calorie and nutritional intake. Similar apps allow you to interpret the data and take the necessary steps to adjust and improve your diet. In the same way, using apps such as budget tracking can help you identify past spending habits and determine how to proceed with future ones. While honing your analytical skills takes practice, there are a few ways through which you can make sure you stay motivated. The more you experience, the more you’ll be able to improve your analytical thinking and skills, and increase your value in your professional life as well.

Improving analytical thinking and skills is in the interest of every employee

Analytical thinking is linked to the ability to gather and analyse information, solve problems and make appropriate decisions. Most employers require applicants to have analytical skills. They are used to solve problems that may not have obvious solutions or have multiple variables. There are many types of analytical skills, including communication, creativity, critical thinking, data analysis, and research. Try our guide on how to improve your analytical thinking and skills and become a valuable team player who will impress any future employer with your resume and skills. How your career develops depends on it too. Make sure you move up in your work and in your everyday life.

What is the LinkedIn platform?

Why are more and more people using LinkedIn? The LinkedIn platform is a very popular social network for professionals where it is possible to post an online CV, i.e. LinkedIn CV. It also serves for companies to find and attract new qualified and motivated candidates who are interesting for them. In both cases, however, you need to have a completed LinkedIn profile. Don’t waste your time with a lengthy LinkedIn course, just do the following points.

Profile on LinkedIn

If a company has created on this platform its LinkedIn business profile, it significantly helps to increase its brand awareness. This kind of presentation is referred to as a “profile on LinkedIn” and is also a way to attract new customers, find new employees, connect with professionals and share content and information with others. The company looks more professional and credible on LinkedIn. Don’t forget to fill in the basic information, just like when you fill in a LinkedIn CV, and upload a LinkedIn profile photo.

LinkedIn business profile

If you’re a business, create your LinkedIn company page and start sharing updates, job offers and other content that will engage your audience.
Remember that your LinkedIn company profile is an extension of your brand, so make sure it’s professional, well-written and visually appealing. A LinkedIn business cover photo should certainly not be missed! Update your LinkedIn company page with relevant information and engage your followers by responding to comments and messages in a timely manner.

Employee CV on LinkedIn

Are you an IT specialist? Create your LinkedIn CV as your own presentation, for example in the form of a LinkedIn Java developer profile. If you’re looking for a job, show recruiters on LinkedIn that you’re ready to find a new job by using a feature on your profile called LinkedIn open and selecting the “to finding a new job” option.
You can also search for specific jobs in specific areas and use different filters to narrow down your results. LinkedIn (LinkedIn networking) can also recommend jobs based on your interests and experience in your profile.

LinkedIn profile vs. resume

The social networking site LinkedIn is sometimes referred to as the online LinkedIn resume. In fact, it’s a platform for professionals where you can have your own profile in the form of an online resume on LinkedIn. This includes your work experience, education, skills and recommendations from other professionals.

There you can share your work experience and build your personal brand. Fill in as much relevant information about yourself as possible and don’t forget the LinkedIn profile summary section.
If you are for example an Agile Coach and you are in your element in IT development, LinkedIn also has a job search function and offers you opportunities to network and connect with other professionals in your field.

Overall, both the LinkedIn profile and the professional resume (CV) have their own unique advantages and can be useful for job searching and networking. While a LinkedIn CV gives professionals a more dynamic and interactive platform to showcase your skills and experience, the information and skills in your resume offer a more comprehensive overview of your professional achievements and qualifications.

LinkedIn vs. LinkedIn Premium

The social network LinkedIn offers both a free and a paid version known as LinkedIn Premium.
The free version provides basic features such as creating a profile, connecting with other professionals and tips on how to find a job through LinkedIn.

LinkedIn Premium

LinkedIn Premium, on the other hand, offers a range of additional features and tools, including advanced search filters and InMail management. With LinkedIn Premium, you can message anyone on the platform, even if you’re not connected to them, to see stats on who’s viewed your profile, including their job title, location and company.

Get contacts of interesting people in your professional field

LinkedIn serves as an effective directory of contacts in the professional field, whether you’re renewing professional contacts from the past, connecting with current colleagues or looking for users who could be useful to you in the future. You can meet and connect with a lot of interesting people on the social network, whether from Slovakia or abroad. You never know when these contacts will help you in your business or career. LinkedIn brings together people from different fields and spheres. And even some that you might not have the chance to come across and make contact with so easily elsewhere.

LinkedIn can serve as a platform for education.

Online learning and development directly on the platform

LinkedIn partly serves and functions as an educational platform. Whether it’s in the form of LinkedIn Learning, a portal where you can find educational webinars on a variety of topics, or inspiration from people and sites that you or your connections follow. On LinkedIn, companies and individuals organise various online workshops and training sessions, which is another opportunity to learn something new.

Gain new opportunities and challenges

It’s not just recruiters and HR professionals who are increasingly using LinkedIn as a tool to acquire new talent for their companies. They do this both by publishing vacancies and adverts, and by actively searching, but especially by approaching potentially suitable candidates.

Some companies now only post their latest job offers on LinkedIn. And if you’re not active on social media, you might miss out on the opportunity of a lifetime. If you’re active on LinkedIn, you’re sure to hear from someone sooner or later with a job offer. This is why it is important to have your personal profile properly created and filled out.

8 tips for effective teamwork

Teamwork is very important for the effective functioning of the company. Read our tips.

If you work as a team leader and are responsible for the functioning and results of a work team, you know how difficult and long-term this process is. On the other hand, working as part of a team is characterised by higher efficiency, better quality results and also greater enjoyment of a job well done. Read our tips on how to build and maintain a successful, high-functioning team in your company that reaps success and doesn’t have to struggle with the competition.

Several studies have pointed to the fact that promoting teamwork in the workplace has a positive impact on productivity and quality of work, creativity, innovation and job satisfaction, which in the long run will help the company to move forward.

Participants who worked in a team, as opposed to those who worked alone, were able to cope with more challenging tasks and also showed more interest as well as enjoyment in their work. These employees were also more motivated to complete assignments and generally performed better. Team spirit can be built over time as long as team members are motivated and their performance is rewarded.

How to improve teamwork in the workplace?

1. Good communication is the key

Communication within the team is key. Although it sounds like a cliché, it is often forgotten. But maintaining clear and good communication, especially in a large team or a team that works remotely, isn’t so easy anymore. According to the study, only 27% of all teams are satisfied with how their team works during an assignment.

Conversely, up to 65% of teams do not feel that their team is functional and think that if they could work better together, the result of their work would be much better. Communication issues are therefore a major problem in teamwork.

Sufficiently open communication in the workplace will ensure that all team members are on the same page, leading to more efficient work in a shorter period of time. Direct and honest communication helps build trust among team members, which also improves overall performance. Unclear instructions and communication noise are common problems and can only be eliminated by fostering team spirit, for example through joint extra-work activities.

2. Clearly defined roles and responsibilities

If a team player is unsure of his own roles and responsibilities, it often creates tension in the team. Teamwork is therefore also important to ensure that each team member knows exactly what they are responsible for and that there is no overlap in projects. The resulting work will be of much higher quality and there is no risk of multiple employees working on the same task or forgetting an assignment.

If multiple employees are working on the same task due to confusion in responsibilities, invaluable time and team effort spent on the task is lost. Each individual should be held accountable for achieving team goals, tools, and mutual support. Establishing clear goals for each team member helps maintain consistency with assigned roles and responsibilities. This is the only way ideal teamwork can look like.

Recommend
We recommend:

If there are disputes within the team, they need to be resolved early as they can escalate into serious problems that will interfere with projects. It is essential that team members proactively address them. At these moments, it is often recommended to involve mediators to help mend relations between colleagues, making teamwork truly effective.

4. Diversity and inclusion in the team

To build a successful team, it needs to be diverse and made up of unique people with different experiences. So it’s important that it’s not just made up of like-minded members. Every single team player is then likely to bring different perspectives and interesting, original ideas to the table. With multiple perspectives comes more thorough decision-making.

People often tend to surround themselves with persons who think and act in ways that reflect their own thoughts and actions. Although a group of like-minded individuals can get along great together, as a team leader, focus on the bottom line and ask yourself these three questions:

  1. Will this team bring fresh ideas to the table?
  2. Will team members encourage each other to look at the project from all possible angles?
  3. Will the team members be so imaginative that they will come up with innovative ideas that no one will question?

If all team members think alike, come from similar backgrounds, and have the same beliefs and opinions, the work the team produces is likely to be one-sided and less creative. If each team member has unique views, beliefs or backgrounds, the team’s results are likely to reflect a greater amount of creativity and innovation.

3. Build trust in the team

Working in a team with someone you don’t trust completely is counterproductive. For this reason, trust is a necessity if you want to lead a successful team. Trust between team members is also strengthened, for example, during joint physical activities, simple team building activities, but time spent together over lunch also works quite well.

It is also important to encourage team members to interact with each other, even outside of working together. Not only will this build trust, but it will also boost morale and employee job satisfaction. Teamwork is more enjoyable if you like the people you work with.

Working in a team is an illustration of the overall state of the company.

5. Autonomy in decision-making processes

Trust in your team members is essential in decision making to build trust and improve teamwork. If people don’t have the autonomy and authority to make decisions about their own work, they often begin to neglect it. Therefore, it is extremely important that each team member has a voice in the decision-making process to express satisfaction or dissatisfaction with their own work and assignments.

6. Managing team meetings

Team meetings, however often they happen, should be used to:

  • planning,
  • brainstorming,
  • reflection,
  • sharing ideas.

Team meetings should be clear, concise and useful in order to increase productivity. No matter how often teams meet, they should have a structured plan for each meeting. This will ensure you have organized and productive meetings, which will also improve team performance.

Did you know that…

A team player who works on a support team feels confident because they know they have something special to offer the team? Employees who are appreciated are also more engaged, especially the introverted ones.

7. Reorganization of team dynamics

If some team members are not doing their tasks or responsibilities, it is important to make some changes. Don’t be afraid to assign tasks to someone else. This is the only way to improve team dynamics and productivity. If team members have tasks that they can’t complete, it will have a negative impact on the entire team.

In most teams, the work is dependent on one or more team members. It is therefore important to ensure that all members are assigned appropriate tasks that allow them to use their skills and show their potential. As a result, they will be able to carry out their job duties much more quickly, easily and naturally.

8. Team learning opportunities

How can you expect everyone to be a perfect team player if they never learned to work on a team project? Some people may take it for granted that they work in a team, but it doesn’t come naturally to everyone. If you want to maximize the benefits of collaboration in the workplace, it’s important to provide your team with the proper training and guidance.

Employee training and development will not only increase teamwork skills, but also employee engagement and satisfaction. Employee training and development through workshops and qualified guest speakers are great ways to ensure that all team members understand the importance of teamwork in the workplace, as well as how to be an effective team member.

Careers and education are interlinked. That’s why it’s vital to expand your knowledge and skills in both professional and personal development to make a difference to your work team.

Teamwork requires an individual approach.

Patience brings roses

Effective teamwork has the potential to increase employee satisfaction and productivity while reducing fluctuation, ultimately helping the company achieve higher profit margins. Every company benefits from promoting successful teamwork in the workplace. Effective teamwork doesn’t happen overnight, it takes time. It is supported by joint company teambuildings, which not only strengthen relationships but also settle any previous misunderstandings and disagreements.

7 Java coding tips to make the programming easier

Read our colleagues’ Java coding tips and make Java programming easier for you. If you’ve decided to take up Java programming, you’ll probably want to take a course first. Regardless of whether you’ve just started your education or you’ve already taken a few classes, there are some rules you won’t normally learn about in a training course. Developers who work in Java on a daily basis have invaluable hands-on experience. We asked our colleagues about it and have written it up in this article. Programming in Java is practical for many reasons. It’s a popular programming language – many employers are looking for Java developers to join their team, so you’ll have no shortage of job offers. Have you already chosen a suitable programming course? To become an experienced Java developer senior, knowledge and valuable experience are needed, but good advice from more experienced colleagues will make it easier and faster. Other programming languages work on a similar principle and if you don’t program yet, you should think about it.

Don’t miss books on Java programming

When it comes to IT and programming books, it’s a bit impractical with them. Technology is evolving at such a rate that by the time a book is published, it is largely out of date. However, some of it remains relevant for a very long time, so this source is not to be entirely condemned either. More effective, however, may be the various periodicals, web sites, blogs or forums and groups for programmers, where you can find many tips on how to solve various problems in Java programming. They are also an effective way to read as much as possible about the experiences of professional and especially experienced programmers.

The teacher is able to detect and explain mistakes from practice, while the student makes mistakes from ignorance. However, in the age of pseudo-experts, there is a fairly good chance that you will come across something that is not quite true. That is why we recommend you to check your sources and draw information only from those who have a long tradition and from people that are specialists in their field.

Join the group of beginner programmers

Like-minded people are going through the same problems as you, so you can learn lessons or find solutions together with others. If you join a Java programming group on a social media, you can solve your own mistakes, help others and, last but not least, stay up to date on the latest trends. Helping each other is the most effective way to move forward.

Code dutifully

“If you want to learn how to code, you have to code,” says Yablko, one of Slovakia’s most popular programming teachers. All the theory in the world won’t replace writing all those tags, syntax and logical relationships. Learn something new all the time, because your knowledge might not be up to date. You’re bound to forget something. Practice is the only way to professionalism, especially when you already know all the basic concepts. Besides, today’s technology is changing so fast that if you don’t keep improving your skills and learning new ones, you will quickly fall behind others.

Make the code as short as possible

A bit of a strange advice, isn’t it? Isn’t it a programmer’s job to write code? Yes and no. Of course, working in Java must involve writing code, but you should still try to write as little as possible to solve a particular problem or task. This doesn’t mean that you should make your code as compact as possible and, for example, name all variables only with single letters of the alphabet. It means that you should try to write only the code that is actually needed to implement the desired functionality. It sometimes happens to Java developers that they create long code in an attempt to cover all possible variations of situations. However, this may not always be efficient. Such additional code may not add any value, but it can still cause a lot of harm. The more code you write, the more chances there are for errors, not to mention the difficulty of maintaining such a mass of data.

Avoid writing comments

It is almost impossible not to have heard at least once in a Java programming course the sentence, “Write comments on the code you create.” Instructors usually argue that when you come back to the code years later, you’ll know what its purpose was. Well, yes. If you’re new to programming, that’s definitely good advice. However, professionals in Java programming and in other languages as well try to avoid comments.

We don’t mean that you’re not supposed to use any comments ever again, but that they can mostly be avoided. Instead, focus on naming things better. Experts say that comments should only be written when you can’t clearly express the intent of a variable or method with a name. So a comment could tell you that, for example, the strange order in which some operations occurred in the code was not a bug, but an intention due to a bug in the underlying operating system. In general, comments are bad not just because they can be avoided in many cases, but especially because they can be deceptive. This is because comments do not automatically update with the rest of the code, and so over time they can become misleading because they can point you in the wrong direction. Well, if you have to check every time whether the code really does what the comment says it does, such a comment is useless.

Learn programming languages gradually

When you’re trying to learn the language of another country, you don’t start with English, Spanish and Esperanto at the same time. It takes time, patience and complete focus to learn any language, including programming languages. Want to learn React? Develop mobile apps? Cross-platform apps using Flutter or React Native? Would you like to finally learn C# or develop games? You’re not alone. Having big plans and high goals is good, but you have to be smart about it. You can learn HTML and CSS at the same time, but you can hardly master both frontend and backend languages at the same time. Choose according to what you want to do.

Java error as a challenge

Don’t be afraid of failure, but instead, learn from your mistakes. Love your error messages, because they will teach you how to program correctly in Java. Repeat to yourself over and over again that if you want to be able to code, you have to code. Step by step. Before you know it, you’ll be proficient in Java programming. 6 useful Excel functions examples you should know

Excel offers a huge range of features that can improve your ability to perform important tasks that are also relevant to your job. It doesn’t matter if you’re the head of a company, work in an office or are just a casual Excel user. We bring you the most practical Excel functions list and some formulas that you definitely need to know and will speed up your work. Excel spreadsheets won’t be a bogey for you from now on, but a useful helper. Here are six steps on how to work in Excel efficiently. Excel spreadsheets can be a real pain sometimes. Apart from creating spreadsheets in Excel, filtering in Excel, locking cells in Excel, diagrams in Excel, contingency table in Excel, Excel multiplication function or how to round numbers in Excel, there are many other tricks to speed up your work in Excel. Think of it as a little Excel training so you’ll have Excel functions in the palm of your hand. Are you ready to learn something new or do you already know everything about all these functions? Don’t let an Excel spreadsheet intimidate you anymore!

Eliminate unnecessary gaps with TRIM

This is the most basic, but also the most important function, of Excel. It is used to trim and remove extra spaces from any cell. Excel’s TRIM function is useful if you pull any data out of a database and then see a lot of gaps. The TRIM function will remove every space from the text, except for single spaces between words. Example: You copy the sample data into a spreadsheet and then paste it into cell A1, which is in a new sheet in Excel. If you want the formula to show the relevant results, you highlight them, click F2, and finally press ENTER. You enter the formula: =TRIM (” Last year’s profits “). The function will remove trailing and leading spaces that are found in the text of the given formula. The result will be: “Last year’s profits”. Once you have mastered similar formulas in Excel, your work will be much more easier.

Learn how to use the Excel VLOOKUP function

Excel VLOOKUP is one of the most well-known and best features of this program, because it connects the data from the spreadsheet as requested by the user. This Excel function finds specific information from a spreadsheet and copies it to another one. Excel’s vlookup function is useful when you need to find the contents in a spreadsheet or range by row. This can be used to look up the price of automotive components by part number or the name of an employee by their identification. Excel’s vlookup functions are handy aid that will save you a lot of time.

You need 4 pieces of information to build a syntax function:

  1. The value you want to seek.
  2. The range within which the search value is located. The VLOOKUP function must always be in the first column of the range only. If the value you are searching for is in cell C2, the range must start with column C.
  3. The number of the column in the range in which the returned value is given. If you specify the range C2:D10, you should count column C as the first column and column D as the second column.
  4. Approximate match or FALSE/TRUE value. If you need an approximate match or a FALSE value, you can enter TRUE instead. This way you get an exact match of the returned value. If you enter nothing, the default value will still be just TRUE or an approximate match.

The HLOOKUP function is similar – there is only a small difference between it and VLOOKUP. VLOOKUP (V) searches for information vertically, that is, it searches for it in columns. The HLOOKUP (H) function searches for information horizontally, that is, in rows. TIP: Try the XLOOKUP function. This is an improved version of the VLOOKUP function, because this Excel function works in any direction and also returns exact matches to the spreadsheet.

Count the cells according to the given criteria with Excel SUMIF function

The SUMIF function is used to count cells according to the specified criteria. For example, you can use it to count the profits you have made in a certain period of time. The SUMIF function is written in the form: =SUMIF(range, criterion). [rozsah_súhrnu]).

What does the data in brackets mean?

  • We specify the range for the cells we need to evaluate.
  • The criteria restrict or select only a certain part of the spreadsheet or cell to be evaluated.
  • The sum_range refers to the cells that need to be counted after evaluating the criteria.

Example: if you have, for example, order numbers, prices, branches and all order data in a spreadsheet and you want to find out the sum of prices only for a certain branch, this function will help you a lot. Excel’s SUMIF function is thus another tool you should start using actively.

Did you know that…

… All textual criteria, or criteria within the SUMIF function that contain mathematical or logical symbols, must be enclosed in double quotation marks (“). Double quotation marks are not necessary for numeric criteria.

The Excel logical IF function is needed to evaluate a given condition and return one of the result values. The primary condition is evaluated as TRUE, which means truth, the so-called fulfilled requirement. The opposite case is FALSE, which means falsehood, an unfulfilled requirement. Requirements in Excel are one of the basic functions of the program. The Excel IF function is useful for example if you need to see in a spreadsheet whether a client has made a purchase over a certain amount. If the condition is fulfilled, he will receive a gift, otherwise he will receive nothing. Excel’s IF function is perfect for this type of task. Try the IF function in Excel and you will see for yourself that it is a very handy tool.

What does the IF function notation look like?

=IF(logical_test;[value_if_true];[value_if_false])[hodnota_ak_pravda])[hodnota_ak_nepravda])

  • The logical_test is any value you need to evaluate. The value will be checked to determine whether or not it has been satisfied.
  • The value_if_true represents the value, formula or text that you get when the entry in the logical_test field evaluates to TRUE, that is satisfied.
  • The value_if_false impersonates the value, formula or text that will be returned if the expression in the logical_test field evaluates to FALSE, that is not satisfied.
Did you know that…

… the Excel IF function can only evaluate a single condition? If you need to evaluate multiple conditions, you should use the AND and OR functions instead. You can combine the Excel IF function with these functions to create the necessary formula.

Calculate individual values with Excel SUM function

The SUM function is used for simple addition of values, where individual values, ranges or cell references can be added. It is possible to combine the three mentioned data, i.e. value, range and cell reference. For example, if you have 6 cells with numeric figures in the range C7:C12, the SUM function will quickly add them. Excel’s SUM function avoids manual addition and makes your work more efficient.

Excel functions RIGHT, LEFT, MID

These Excel text functions are used to grab specific sections from the text. Thanks to them, you can select only a part of a numeric and text string. Each function, according to its name, helps to select a certain number of text or numeric characters from the right, left or center. The RIGHT function is needed to return the specified number of characters from the right side of the text string. You write the function as follows: =RIGHT(text; [num_chars]). The LEFT function is used to return the specified number of characters from the left side of the text string. The function notation looks like this: =LEFT(text; [num_chars]). The MID function is ideal for returning some portion of a text string from a specified position and based on a specified number of characters. The notation of the MID function is as follows: =MID(text; start_num; num_chars).

What does the data in brackets mean?

  • Text indicates a text string – it contains the characters you need to extract.
  • The start_num (starting position) is the position of the very first character you want to select.
  • The number_chars (number of characters) specifies the number of characters to be in the final result.

Working with Excel can be a breeze

Do you know all of these basic functions in Excel? Knowing them will save you a lot of time doing work that would otherwise take you hours. Plus, knowing them can advance your career. Of course, Excel packs an incredible amount of features that could be written about endlessly. We’ve shown you a brief basics that you should know too. If any feature in Excel makes your work more efficient, it is a success!

Software developers’ New Year’s resolutions

Are you planning to find a job or improve your fitness in the new year? Take inspiration from our article. The last day of the year is inherently associated with fun, celebrations and the midnight countdown. It’s when we say goodbye to the old year, turn over a new leaf, and welcome the new year with joy and hope. Everything that is new, after all, should be better, more beautiful and more successful. Take a look at the most common resolutions (not only) for programmers and read our guide on how to keep them throughout the year. With the start of the year comes a special feeling of new beginnings, which is associated with the chance to make a change. We make resolutions in the hope that we can fight back and improve on the things we don’t like about ourselves. Do you want to lose weight, quit smoking or learn how to program in C# even though the concept of HTML doesn’t mean anything to you? These are admittedly bold plans, but they tend to evaporate as quickly as bubbles from a toast if you set them on New Year’s Eve. Resolutions need to be planned in advance and, most importantly, you need to find a way to keep them. Then you can leave the real changes for the first days of the New Year and enjoy the New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Eat healthier

You know it, the project deadline is approaching, the boss is expecting a presentation, the code is reporting hidden bugs and the program is not working properly. Stress, hunger, time pressure. At times like these, you often eat up some fast food or whatever jumps out of the fridge at you. The last time you read about a healthy and balanced diet was in a magazine. But it definitely shouldn’t always be that way, because your body will do the math later. Steering towards a healthier diet can be done in a non-intrusive and quite comfortable way. Nowadays, every restaurant does takeaways and the choice is unlimited. Just have a good portion of fresh vegetables with every meal and skip the sugary drinks, they hide a lot of unnecessary calories. Try a fruit smoothie instead, which is packed with vitamins. Tastes best when it’s fresh. We also promote a healthy lifestyle in our company. As a Christmas present, colleagues had the opportunity to choose a pack of nutritional supplements or a smoothie shaker to give them the right motivation to take better care of their bodies from the inside.

A healthy mind in a healthy body

Sedentary jobs are one of the most serious factors that negatively affect our health. If you do not do manual work for a living, you spend about eight hours a day sitting. Going to squash once in two weeks is a good start, but it doesn’t solve the problem. Nor does it help if you buy an annual gym membership in a feeling of enthusiasm and then don’t use it. Such rash resolutions usually end as quickly as they started. Instead of making radical changes, try adding one “health” walk to your daily routine, even around the house. It will help you improve your fitness if you take more opportunities to get around on foot. Regular exercise is really important. If we don’t move enough, our bodies can become impaired in fat metabolism, develop hardening of the blood vessels and develop cardiovascular disease, become overweight to obese, and this in turn can lead to diabetes. Even an hour’s walk after work will make sure you meet your minimum daily exercise limit. Regular sports activity is a great bonus. In our team, we also maintain a sporting spirit thanks to the company gym – Fitlandia, where we regularly go to work out. Colleagues who prefer group exercises or the swimming pool use the multisport card and do sports when and where they like.

Get rid of back and joint pain

Sitting all day will sooner or later take its toll on you. The first symptom is likely to be back pain. Experts have known this for a long time, and better work chairs are being produced. They have properly shaped backrests and most parts can be adjusted and customized. If you often work from home, you can be sure that a good quality chair, although a big investment, is definitely a good investment in yourself. There are also special hard ‘U’ shaped chair cushions on the market to reduce pressure on the tailbone, and mouse or keyboard pads to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome are certainly worth it. As a preventive measure, it is advisable to do regular back exercises. They are easy and only take a few minutes a day. Definitely read our article Healthy back. msg life Slovakia takes care of stiff muscles of its employees with regular massages, which clearly belong to one of the favourite employee benefits.

Have more free time

Setting up the right time management is quite an art. How much time is appropriate to work and how much to spend on free time activities? Most of us have strictly limited working hours, so you just need to get everything done that’s in your job description. Here are some tips to help you work more efficiently and avoid procrastination:

  • Ignore social media – turn off notifications when you’re working. Don’t even try to look at the screen. You don’t need a lot of the stuff you’ll find there anyway, and you can check out the important information at home after work.
  • Use a “to do list “ – it doesn’t matter if you use an app or a diary. If you have written down what you need to do, you’re close to being organized. It’s also a good idea to mark tasks with a level of importance and always start the day with those that need to be done as soon as possible.
  • Start with the hardest task – do the thing you least want to do first. Because once you’ve done that, every other task will be easier and more manageable. Otherwise, you’ll waste a lot of time procrastinating, looking for anything just so you don’t have to tackle an unpleasant task. And consequently, you’ll be late even with the easy ones.

Learn a new (programming) language

As many languages you know, as many times you are a human being. Learning a new language, even a programming language, is always a good decision. It’s just kind of hard to get started. You can learn programming languages online, just like you can learn foreign languages. You just need to choose the right online course. We’ll tell you where to find both free and paid courses in our article Coding tips for beginners. Set aside an hour a day, or at least half an hour if you really can’t do more. Just a few dozen minutes a day. You’ll find out that it will put only a minimal time pressure on you, and you’ll notice quite quickly how much you’ve already learned and that you’re getting better and better at the subject. And that, in turn, will motivate you to learn even more.

Improve your soft skills

The labour market has long valued so-called “soft skills” over “hard skills”. It makes sense. Learning to code is only a matter of time. Even if it takes longer for someone, it can be done. And most importantly, it’s a fairly “measurable” skill. Soft skills are those skills that basically can’t be measured. They include, in addition to the mentioned time management, for example:

  • communication and presentation skills,
  • teamwork,
  • stress management,
  • conflict management,
  • flexibility and proactivity,
  • positive thinking and attitude,
  • responsibility,
  • self-motivation.

Although these skills are difficult to measure, you can try to learn them. It certainly never hurts to take a course that will help you improve your presentation skills, for example. Courses are easier and more effective than you might think, and since they are mostly done in a playful way, you’ll probably enjoy them too.

Maintain and improve team relationships

Every company tries to strengthen relationships in the workplace, mostly through team-building activities. But these are practically impossible in a pandemic, so you could try to do it yourself. People who get along in private also perform better at work. You don’t have to bake cakes for your colleagues; friendly, open communication is perfectly sufficient. Ask them on a video call or chat how their weekend was or how their kids are doing. A short discussion in which you show genuine interest can not only help you to perform better at work, but also to improve the overall atmosphere at work. Even though working fully remotely or in a hybrid form has become an everyday reality for us, our colleagues still keep the office door open at all times. A chat over a coffee with colleagues always improves the mood in the workplace. In the same way, our colleagues can also organize a team-building activity, which will be covered by the company.

Find a better job

There is a major labour shortage in the IT sector today. According to the job portal Profesia the least competition for candidates is in IT. This is due to the fact that the pandemic has moved most of life (including work) to the online space. It is therefore not at all difficult to change jobs, even for people who have never worked in IT before. Right now is a good time to start in this field. Before you definitely decide to change jobs, you should set your priorities. Today, few people make decisions when changing jobs based on salary alone. If you don’t like only part of your job, try to open a debate with your manager on the subject. If you’re an important member of the team, it’s possible that they will adjust your job description. However, if you feel demotivated, lack a sense of recognition, are stressed and have health problems, it’s time for a change. There are plenty of options, also at msg life Slovakia. Take a look at our latest job offers.

Take care of your health

A good diet and regular exercise are not enough to take care of your health. Equally important are regular preventive check-ups, which many of us have been putting off during the pandemic. When working with a computer, the eyes suffer. If you feel that something is wrong, it needs to be addressed as soon as possible. Do you have poor eyesight, eye or headaches? Don’t ignore your body’s signals and put yourself in the hands of experts. Unaddressed problems tend to get worse over time.

A woman talking to a doctor about her medical condition
Regular preventive check-ups with the doctor could be an important resolution.

Learn to say “no”

Most people have a problem to say no. Rejecting someone can seem negative as most of the time you are trying to help and accommodate. But as the saying goes, too much of anything is bad. An irresponsible colleague isn’t exactly the kind of person you should always go out of your way to accommodate. You have your own timetable and that is the most important. If you have time, there’s nothing wrong with helping someone out once in a while. However, you should be able to recognize exploitation.

Tips on how to keep New Year’s resolutions

  • Start with small goals. Any long-term sustainable change is a long process. If you want to lose weight, your goal doesn’t have to be to win a fitness competition right away; try making it a goal to eat more vegetables.
  • Give your resolutions the right reason. If you’re not really convinced about something, it will never be a priority for you. On the contrary, if you justify every resolution in detail, the chances of you keeping it will increase.
  • Document your progress. Try writing your resolutions in a list in your diary in a place you can’t miss and keep writing down your goals. It will definitely increase your motivation to keep going.
  • Be patient. No one is perfect and we all make mistakes or slip off the right path from time to time. If you need a break from training, feel free to take it, but don’t forget to keep your eyes on your long-term goals.
  • Reward yourself. Following a strict diet or working out at the gym is difficult. So don’t forget to reward yourself for your performance from time to time. Go out for a nice dinner or do something that makes you happy.
  • Share your resolutions with loved ones. If you tell friends, colleagues or family about your resolutions and the goals you want to achieve, they can help you when you slip off track. If you eventually manage to lose weight or start running regularly, it’s great motivation for them to do something good for themselves too.
  • Common goals are easier to manage. Make the same resolution with a colleague, friend or partner to motivate each other.

Are you already inspired enough to keep your willpower and keep your New Year’s resolutions? Great, the first step is successfully behind you, because beginnings are always the hardest. Wishing you good luck, determination and a strong will to improve in your private or professional life!
