Generations X, Y, Z and Baby boomers in the workplace: how to work with them?

Generations X, Y, Z and Baby Boomers differ from each other in many aspects. While Generation Z is known for growing up with a phone in hand and in a social networking environment, Baby Boomers often have trouble keeping up with the latest technology. What other differences can we observe that characterize each generation and how can we work with them effectively?

Who are baby boomers?

Baby boomers include people born between 1946 and 1964. These are people born after World War II, when birth rates increased dramatically around the world in what is known as the “boom”. The name of this generation comes from this period.

Baby boomers represent the smallest segment in the workplace today. Many of them have retired after many years of being loyal to one or two companies at most. But if you meet them, you may notice that they work a little differently than their younger colleagues. Their characteristics include:

  • Baby boomers take pride in their work and are always pleased when someone compliments them on it. They rarely question themselves and don’t think about things as intensely as millennials or Generation Z.
  • Baby boomers want to continue working even when they have the opportunity to retire.
  • The Baby Boomer generation is self-sufficient and prefers to work independently rather than as a team, which is an advantage in many areas.
  • Thanks to a fairly strict upbringing, baby boomers are rational and can make thoughtful and objective decisions.
  • Because Boomers were born at a time of significant population growth, many of them literally had to compete for jobs as adults. This trait has become ingrained in them, which is why they often do the impossible to achieve their goals (such as getting a promotion).

Baby boomers

Generation X

Generation X includes people born between 1965 and 1979 or 1980. It is known for having survived the AIDS epidemic and significant changes in the economic environment. In the work sphere, it differs from the Boomers in that it has quickly adopted a work-life balance. Work is still important to her, but it is no longer the most important pillar of her life.

People from Generation X (or “Gen X” for short) are in high demand today because they are considered the most stable workforce in the eyes of employers. Boomers are retiring and many millennials are still looking.

Other features of Generation X include:

  • Generation X values informality and most of them have a university degree.
  • Generation X is technologically savvy. Even though they didn’t grow up in a world where computers or cell phones were a normal part of life, they have no problem learning something new.
  • Generation X is independent and resourceful, which is mainly due to the upbringing they received. Most grew up with minimal adult supervision and therefore had to fend for themselves at a young age.
  • The most significant feature is the fact that people belonging to Generation X adapt well to change. Therefore, they do not mind if they have to change their job focus.
  • Generation X prides itself on emotional intelligence. It has excellent self-control, is empathetic and does not lack social skills.

“Husak’s Children” generation

Between Generations X and Y, there is one special one in Slovakia and the Czech Republic called Husák’s Children. This includes those born during the famous population wave that lasted from 1970 to 1976. This era was notable for the fact that the birth rate increased dramatically during it – from 80,000 births at the beginning of the decade to 100,000 in 1978, to be precise.

The increase in fertility has been influenced by a number of factors. Many attribute it mainly to the increased allowances and child allowances introduced by Husák. However, experts argue that the reformed newlywed loans, additional maternity leave (now known as parental leave) and the extension of maternity leave to three years were also key.

Generation Y

If you’re asking who millennials are, the answer is simple. They are those born between 1981 and 1996 (according to some sources between 1980 and 1994). This generation is also referred to by the letter Y and is considered to be the first to grow up with the advances of technology such as computers and mobile phones. As a result, it is considered to be tech-savvy.

Not only do millennials understand technology, but they also don ‘t shy away from novelty. They love to learn new things, constantly expanding their theoretical and practical skills.

At the same time, these people value flexibility. With most tasks usually done via computer, they are looking for job offers that allow full or at least partial telecommuting. A large percentage of them therefore work, for example, as Java programmers, journalists, social media specialists and so on.

Other characteristics of millennials include:

  • Generation Y strives to maintain a work-life balance, even though these boundaries are often blurred and they work more than they should.
  • Millennials are results-oriented. That’s why they prefer to talk about what they’ve accomplished rather than how much they’ve worked for it.
  • Interestingly, millennials crave praise and appreciation much more than other generations. This may be because during their adolescence, they began to develop social networks that are based on external validation.
  • Generation Y is made up of innovators who are constantly looking for ways to be more efficient and better. They often ask additional questions and find out which processes could be made faster, shorter or simpler.
  • Instead of working individually, millennials are focusing on collaboration. If they don’t know something or something doesn’t work, they don’t hesitate to turn to their work team for help.

Generation Z

There is a clear answer to the question of what Generation Z is, too. This group includes people born between 1997 and 2010, or between 1995 and 2009, depending on the sources you read.

A defining characteristic of Generation Z children is that they are born into a world where they are constantly connected to others. Initially, this was through phone calls and SMS or MMS messages. Later, with the advent of social networking, the transfer of information has become even more intense.

Since Generation Z routinely uses a variety of technologies in their personal lives, they expect to work with them in the workplace as well. Of all the generations, they understand new software and programs the best. Their knowledge is usually based on their own trial-and-error learning at home.

Other features of Generation Z include:

  • Generation Z is not attracted to traditional 9-to-5 jobs, and many are trying to break into social media, for example by making videos or sharing other interesting content.
  • Compared to other generations, Generation Z is less tolerant of authoritarian environments. It expects open and effective communication as well as support from a superior. This is borne out by a survey from the Workforce Institute, which found that up to 32% of respondents would never tolerate a manager who could not support them. Conversely, 47% would appreciate someone who trusts them, and 40% require support.
  • Research from the Workforce Institute also shows that Generation Z has clear career expectations. A whopping 57% of respondents said they expect to get promoted at least once a year, with 35% saying they measure their personal success by how quickly they progress at work.
  • Generation Z is strongly opposed to workplace bullying and gender pay inequality. It publicly addresses these issues and seeks to eradicate them.
  • Generation Z is one of the most informed generations. People who belong to it have had instant access to the internet and the latest news all their lives. They have been able to follow major social and political events that have brought about significant changes. Therefore, they have no problem making big decisions that can greatly affect their careers.

Interesting fact

Despite growing up in a world with phones, laptops and tablets, Generation Z is much more likely to prefer face-to-face meetings over online phone calls when it comes to communication. This detail can be quite important in the workplace, as many companies adopted online meetings during the coronavirus pandemic.

The latest Alfa generation

The latest Alfa generation

The latest generation is considered to be the so-called Gen Alpha. This means you probably won’t see them in the workplace for a while. However, it’s worth knowing what makes them different from previous generations.

First of all, it is important to know that Gen Alpha is the very first generation that does not know a world without social networks, the Internet and computers. In fact, these children were born at a time when Instagram, Facebook and YouTube were gaining popularity. Also, their way of learning is significantly different from other generations. Computers, tablets and mobile phones help them to do their homework or search for information.

All of this will have a significant impact on how Gen Alpha works in the future. In practice, this will mean that they will be happy to use the latest technology and be open to it.

Generation X, Y, Z and baby boomers in the workplace – how to manage them all at once?

Generational differences are common. Each generation grew up in a different era, which greatly influences how they approach tasks and work in general. To avoid unpleasantness and conflict in the workplace, you’ll be better off if you follow these tips.

Be aware of generational differences in employees

Find out about all the generations and find out what their characteristics are, how they approach their work and what they require. While Boomers are loyal and hardworking, Generation Z has no problem changing jobs overnight. It’s important to communicate well with them and show support.

Based on the differences, you’ll know what each generation’s strengths and weaknesses are. This will make it easier for you to allocate tasks and competences.

In addition to the differences, look for commonalities in your colleagues. This will help you bring the whole team together and improve its functioning.

They have a positive effect on everyone, regardless of age employee benefitssuch as tasty breakfasts, team-building events or pleasant offices.

Did you know that…

… the generation of children born between 2025 and 2039 already has a name? It’s called Gen Beta, and it’s expected to be very similar to Gen Alpha. This means that children will be born into a world with mobile phones, computers, the internet and social networks. However, unlike other generations, they will value diversity much more and find it easier to accept change and differences.

Don’t lump everyone together

Even though generations have their own characteristics, it does not mean that all individuals are the same. Each person is unique and has different characteristics. Therefore, approach your colleagues, subordinates or superiors individually and try to understand them.

Forget bias

Each of us has certain prejudices and ideas about others, even about each generation. However, in a work team you should forget about them and form your opinion about a person only after you have spent a few days or weeks with them. Give everyone a chance to show their strengths. This is the only way to find out how smart your new colleagues can be.

Try to give clear feedback

Feedback is key. Thanks to it, a person can continuously progress and perform better. When a colleague hands you an assignment, look at it carefully and let them know what was great about it and what you would change or improve.

When giving feedback, keep in mind that it should be objective. It should not include your personal feelings or opinions. At the same time, try to make sure that it contains not only the negatives but also the positives. When you praise a colleague, the feedback will be much easier to accept.

Girl’s Day 2025 at msg life Slovakia: Opening doors to IT

Technology is not just for boys. It is for anyone who has the desire to explore, create, and change the world. The IT sector has long ceased to be an exclusively male domain. Yet, women remain underrepresented in technical fields, often due to persistent stereotypes, fear of the unknown, or a lack of role models. Girl’s Day is an initiative that is changing this – and at msg life Slovakia, we are proud to be part of it again this year.

📅 On 24 April 2025, we are opening our doors to girls at our offices in Bratislava, Zilina, and Kosice. For Girl’s Day 2025, we have prepared a day full of inspiration, hands-on workshops, and real-life stories from women in our IT world.

This year, we once again have a programme packed with inspiration and technology – from testing and programming to data analytics.

Sign up for Girl’s Day at one of our offices:

Testing as a gateway to IT: Curiosity and logic are more important than programming

Testing is a great starting point for IT – even for those who do not know how to code. All you need is logical thinking, attention to detail, and a willingness to figure out why things do not work. Of course, if you eventually learn the basics of programming, it will take you even further – for example, into automated testing.

We will also focus on the topic of programming on Girl's Day
We will also focus on the topic of programming on Girl’s Day

At Girl’s Day, our testers Danka and Xenia will explore this topic with you. They will show you what a tester job entails, what a typical day in this role looks like, and how you can start building a career in tech even without prior IT experience.

Programming: Discover the world of code in an understandable and fear-free way

Programming is like learning a new language – you start with simple phrases and eventually use them to accomplish big things. If IT appeals to you, learning the basics of programming is an excellent springboard – especially if you are considering a career in testing, analytics, or software development.

At Girl’s Day, our programmer Veronika will also cover this topic. She will show you that coding is not just for the chosen few. She will explain the basics in a simple and understandable way – without fear of the unknown. Veronika will also share her journey into IT, how she became interested in mathematics, and how it led her to become a programmer.

You will also have the chance to experience your first encounter with code and understand that programming is primarily about logic, creativity, and problem-solving – not memorizing commands.

Data analytics as a creative tool for problem-solving

Many girls fear numbers, but the truth is that analytics and data work are much more than just Excel spreadsheets. It is about finding meaning in data, recognizing patterns, and making recommendations that influence real-world decisions.

Sisters Nikola and Veronika know this well. They joined msg life Slovakia through different paths but have both grown into key roles in data analytics and controlling. They have learned to work with tools like Excel, Power BI, and SQL, demonstrating that even ordinary data can produce valuable insights that shape entire projects.

At Girl’s Day, they will show you that numbers do not have to be the enemy but can instead be a creative tool for achieving great things.

There is a place for every woman in IT – Where diversity becomes an advantage

The path into IT is diverse and does not have to be linear. Many of our female colleagues studied marketing, translation, logistics, or completely unrelated fields, yet today they work as testers, analysts, or developers. Some started with courses, others through curiosity – but they all agree on one thing: there is a place for every woman in IT.

Testing is an ideal entry point into IT – even for those who do not know how to code.
Testing is an ideal entry point into IT – even for those who do not know how to code.

Why is this important?
If technological solutions are created by only a narrow group of people, they reflect a limited worldview. They may perpetuate a so-called gender bias – a prejudice that consciously or unconsciously disadvantages one gender (often women) and restricts innovation.

Women in IT bring fresh perspectives, different problem-solving approaches, and skills such as empathy, creativity, and attention to detail, which are incredibly valuable in a technical environment.

At msg life Slovakia, we support diversity and balance not just in words but in action. We believe technology is for everyone – regardless of age, gender, or prior experience. That is why we organise events like Girl’s Day. To show girls that the doors to IT are open. All they have to do is step through.

Too much screen time? Try a digital detox

Read digital detox tips on how to prevent digital addiction.

Instead of helping us and making our daily lives easier, technology is controlling us. Just think of the last time you left the house without your smartphone. Or you were angry if someone didn’t reply to your message within a minute. Or maybe you had withdrawal symptoms when your computer broke down. This is just an example of how technology controls us. We at msg life Slovakia come into contact with technology on a daily basis, which is why we have prepared some digital detox tips to prevent screen addiction.

Nowadays, of course, it is impossible to exist without technology. Some may argue that it is possible. But we can certainly agree that life is more convenient with technology. And most importantly, no one wants to be a weirdo with a push-button phone and no TV in the living room. Can the use of technology be limited and when do we become dependent on it?

Did you know?

In 2019, on average, each of us spent 6 hours and 42 minutes on the internet in a single day.

What is digital detox

The term digital detox was introduced in relation to the excessive use of mobile devices, screen addiction and the loss of self-control when using modern digital technologies. It is a targeted restriction, but not a complete exclusion, of interaction with smartphones, tablets and laptops for a certain period of time. Its need has been further pointed out by the recent global pandemic.

There are a number of digital detox examples. One of them is a complete digital detox, i.e. the complete removal of technology from everyday life for a period of time. Internet access, a computer, a smartphone and, yes, Netflix or TV. This detox will definitely test your relationship with modern gadgets and digital content.

A less drastic option is the so-called periodic digital detox, which works on a similar principle, but you remove technology from your life in a specific part of the day or week. This kind of detox is suitable for those who continuously use digital technologies in their professions and want to avoid their excessive use also in their personal life and leisure time.

The third option is a digital detox from social media, where you don’t necessarily have to remove all technology, social media is enough. For starters, this type of detox is ideal. Do you think it doesn’t apply to you and that you don’t spend much time on social media? Try tracking how often you open your social media apps for a day, even if you know you won’t find anything new there.

#msgtip

Smartphones have the ability to track the amount of time spent on the device. This way you can track how long you’ve been using each app.

The last type is the holiday digital detox. Use your holiday as a break from technology and spend time with yourself, your family, exploring nature and sightseeing. A holiday detox is the best option for people who can’t work without digital technology. Our HR manager Veronika also has a proven method, spending no more than an hour on her mobile phone or other devices every day. “During my holidays I check my phone in the evening, but then I just see what’s new and put it away again,”.

Another colleague Majka from the HR team has the experience of long-term disconnection from the world of technology. “Last summer I went a month without using technology on a hike from Dukla to Devin. It brought me peace and distance from everyday life,” said Majka. Other than this type of detox, she uses her phone minimally, “I fill my time with other activities,”.

What are the risks of screen addiction

Anyone can fall into a bad habit which, over time, grows into an addiction. Someone is trying to quit smoking or has a designated period during the year when they do not drink alcohol. It is similiar with technology. Have you ever said, after spending a whole day on the device, that you don’t even want to see your phone and laptop the next day? This is how digital addiction begins and like other addictions, it has different forms. According to psychologists, a person may not only be addicted to the Internet itself, but also to specific activities or applications. For some, digital addiction takes the form of excessive use of social media, for others it is online gambling or compulsive shopping.

Digital technology has become a part of our lives to the point when we don’t even see it as a threat. However, the opposite is true and among the most common negative consequences of excessive use of technology on humans are distorted perceptions of reality, loss of analytical thinking, memory impairment, less physical activity, loss of physical interactions.

Consequences of screen addiction

Social media are more and more popular and, especially among young people, pose a threat to their perception of reality. When we use social media, our brains receive a lot of stimuli that trigger pleasant feelings. However, the problem can arise when one returns to the offline world and everything suddenly seems “boring”.

The consequences of excessive use of these media can be the following:

  • negative impact on relationships with family and friends,
  • less time for yourself and leisure activities,
  • risk of greater vulnerability due to sharing of often private or intimate content,
  • problems related to the development of one’s own identity, especially when unable to match the demanded ideals,
  • a change in the value ladder,
  • loss of critical thinking and the related inability to distinguish credible information from hoaxes.

The excessive use of not only social media, but also of digital technologies as such, can be much more serious. It can also negatively affect our mental and physical health. With screen addiction, you’re at risk of:

  • fatigue,
  • visual impairment as a result of exposure to blue light,
  • possible psychological conditions ranging from anxiety to depression,
  • frequent mood swings and feelings of loneliness.

A digital detox can help you prevent physical and mental problems.
Beat addiction with a digital detox

Are you addicted to technology? Test yourself

If you want to know if you are screen addicted or not, ask yourself these 5 questions:

  1. Do I often go online after my work?
  2. Do I check my messages and emails as soon as I wake up?
  3. Is it hard to put my phone out of my hand when someone wants something from me?
  4. Do I take my phone with me everywhere? (yes, everywhere, even the toilet ☺)
  5. Do I spend more than an hour a day on my phone?

Did you answer yes to at least three of them? Then you’re probably suffering from digital addiction and you might even be at risk of digital dementia. If not, congratulations! Anyway, be sure to read our digital detox tips.

Digital detox tips from our colleagues

  • Turn off notifications

Check your messages when you have the time, not when a notification tells you to. Limit the number of notifications to only those that are truly necessary, such as phone calls, text messages and work emails. “I’ve turned off notifications and usually have my phone on silent mode. I’m not so disturbed by beeping messages,” says Zuzka, Office Manager.

  • Be offline at least an hour before bedtime

Our bodies and sleep are also negatively affected by the blue light emitted by screens and artificial lighting. At least an hour before bed, put your phone down, turn off the TV and switch to the offline world. You’ll find time for yourself and your sleep will improve. “Every night after a certain hour I turn off my phone and keep it off until morning. I turn it on when I go to work,” revealed Lukas, Test Manager.

  • Uninstall unnecessary apps

Remove all the unnecessary apps and games from your phone that are distracting and you don’t necessarily need. You can also check social media news on your computer. It’s less comfortable, but that’s exactly the principle – do not check them so often.

  • Enjoy your meal without screens

The need to constantly check our digital devices, which manifests itself in scrolling through the screen even when doing an activity like eating, is referred to as FOMO (Fear of missing out). Talk to your colleagues, family or pursue your interests for a while on your lunch break. Give your head and eyes a rest while eating.

  • Go on holiday without your mobile phone and laptop

Try a holiday digital detox and enjoy your free time completely technology-free. In addition, many locations offer the convenience of limited signal. Some wellness resorts even have areas equipped with special copper plates to ensure that guests are disconnected from wifi and mobile signals.

  • Leave your phone at home

Go shopping at the store or walk your dog without your mobile phone. Gradually extend this time. If you can’t do that, you may be suffering from nomophobia – the fear of being without your phone. Our colleague also indulges in his daily dose of digital detox in his spare time. “After work, I don’t feel the need to turn on my computer at all,” says Michal, a software developer.

  • Set aside one full day without technology

There are many things you can do without technology. If you have to be on the phone for an emergency, try swapping it for a classic push-button phone for the day. It’s not a luxury, but you can use it to make phone calls and at least you won’t be surfing the internet. “I minimize my contact with technology when I’m hiking, which means at least one day on the weekend,” shared with us Majka, the HR manager.

  • Return to the classics

Experts advise that with any addiction, the key is to change the way you live, i.e. your habits. Try to be old style in certain things and go back to the “pre-smartphone” era. Pull out the classic alarm clock so your smartphone isn’t the first thing you look at in the morning. With your morning coffee, instead of scrolling through the screen, read a classic newspaper or magazine.

Digital detox at msg life Slovakia

It seems unrealistic to completely eliminate digital technologies nowadays. To limit them will require a strong will and often self-denial. But the result will be worth it.

We know that. That is why we have arranged rooms for our colleagues, where they can switch off and be away from their computer screens for a while. Examples include a fitness centre, relaxation area, table football or massage. That way they come up with different ideas and get a lot of new inspiration. Give it a try and let us know how you’re doing in your digital detox.

Carpal tunnel syndrome: symptoms and consequences

The carpal tunnel is strained by both manual work and working at a computer. Carpal tunnel syndrome is accompanied by tingling and numbness of the hands. We advise you how to prevent it. Long-term work at the computer has a negative effect on our health. Sitting in one position for hours causes muscle stiffness and back pain. The harsh blue light of the monitor has a negative effect on our eyesight and even affects our sleep. A lesser-known syndrome of working at a computer, however, is the so-called carpal tunnel syndrome. Initially innocent hand numbness can develop into serious health complications, so we should try to prevent them at the first sign. How to do it?

Carpal tunnel syndrome – a pitfall in the office

Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the most common nerve affections of the upper limbs. There may be several causes, but it is often referred to as an occupational disease. Through the carpal tunnel, blood vessels, nerves and tendons pass from the forearm to the palm. Overloading the hand can cause pressure on the nerve, leading to tingling, numbness or burning. It often arises as a result of manual work, wrist overuse or repetitive, monotonous activity. One such activity is working at a computer, where the hands are in an unnatural position for long periods of time.

Good equipment is essential

Every craft is characterized by equipment, without which the final product would not be of sufficient quality. In the same way that a carpenter can’t create smooth lines out of raw pieces of wood without good tools, you can’t work to your full potential when you’re uncomfortable and can’t concentrate. Such discomfort can be caused by an unnatural position of the hand placed on the mouse. Even a simple gel mouse and keyboard pad can relieve this tension, because it’s moulded just right for the comfort of your hand.

Exercise your hands

After an hour of sedentary work, a short movement or exercise is recommended to loosen up the back. The same advice applies to your hands. Several times a day, stretch your wrists, fingers, forearms, shoulders or neck thoroughly. You shouldn’t forget your arms and torso either. Although these parts may seem distant from the problem area, everything in our body is interconnected. Always stretch your muscles only as much as your body allows. Violent straining of the limbs can cause muscles to pull.

Carpal tunnel exercises
Try hand and wrist exercises to release tension in your hands.

Get rid of bad habits

The occurrence of carpal tunnel can also be facilitated by improper sitting. In addition to poor posture, resting your wrists on a table can lead to tingling and numbness in your fingers. When working at the computer, it is therefore advisable to keep your wrists in the air, or to prop your hands up so that your wrists feel comfortable and are in a relaxed position. It is the cramps that may be the trigger for this syndrome. It is important to keep your hands warm, as cold also causes muscle tension.

Hand position is important when working with a PC
Carpal tunnel syndrome can be caused by an unnatural hand position on a mouse or keyboard.

Take care of your health

Although the degree of heredity is often discussed in carpal disease, people who are overweight, have diabetes or rheumatism are more susceptible to the disease. It is therefore important to keep yourself in good health. If you experience the first symptoms and you are a smoker, you should quit the habit. This is because smoking impairs blood circulation in the body, which contributes to the worsening of carpal disease. In addition, women who are going through hormonal changes are more likely to suffer from this syndrome and are thus more susceptible to it.

Avoid heavy weights

Although carpal tunnel is often associated with sedentary work, frequent overuse of the hands can also cause numbness and tingling. Always ask for help when lifting heavy weights that cause you physical problems. This will not only prevent unpleasant tingling in your fingertips, but also more serious health complications such as hernia. In addition to carpal tunnel syndrome, you also need to watch out for a condition called tennis elbow, which is related to an overuse injury on the outside of the elbow and arises in a similar way to carpal disease.

How to improve critical thinking and how can it help you

If we ask what thinking is, we know the answer: it is a complex mental process that involves the ability to process information, form ideas, solve problems, and make judgments. What forms of thinking do we know and how to change our thinking? What is critical thinking and how to improve it properly?

Critical thinking is a quality that is often talked about, but not everyone knows exactly what it means. However, this is an important characteristic that appears many times in advertisements and job offers.

Critical thinking meaning

Critical thinking, often called “good thinking,” is a process where an individual thinks systematically, logically, and objectively. They can make thoughtful decisions, solve problems and develop new mind operations. Good thinking is important in all areas of life, from personal decision-making, to professional work, to social and political conversation or speeches.
In practice, critical thinking is demonstrated by the fact that one does not just look at a situation superficially, but can go deep. They also have an open mind and try to look at the issue from multiple perspectives.

Thanks to this, they are much better at reasoning and communicating logically with others. A critical thinker is able to observe their surroundings and other people’s mind operations. Their expression is clear and understandable. They does not jump from one topic to another and are very easy to listen to.

Critical thinking and logical thinking are related, and overall, logical thinking provides the basic structure that critical thinking uses in evaluating information and forming opinions. Critical thinking then develops these logical skills and applies them to the analysis of different situations and arguments. Logical thinking also refers to rational thinking. A fundamental feature for rational thinking is the ability to draw the right conclusions from the available evidence and to use logic to solve problems.

Logical thinking meaning

The logical thinking is analyzing a situation or problem using reason and coming up with potential solutions. It is a special form of human mental activity that makes it possible to understand everything that surrounds us, and the relationships or differences that exist between actions, objects or events observable by analysis and comparison. Logical thinking is not limited to mathematical tasks or formal deductive reasoning.
Key aspects of logical thinking include, for example, identifying relationships, thinking correctly and drawing conclusions, avoiding logical fallacies, reasoning consistently, and analytical skills. Participate in discussions or debates on topics that require critical thinking and logic, solve logical problems and avoid logical fallacies. Also, working with numbers and math is a way to improve logical thinking.

Rational thinking meaning

The abilities to think, reason and make decisions in a systematic, consistent and logical way are essential features of rational thinking. Rational thinking allows us to analyze situations and find solutions based on facts and evidence. It provides a framework for effective and objective understanding of the world around us.
Here are some key characteristics of rational thinking: rational decision making, logical structure, the ability to infer and analyze problems based on detailed and systematic analysis.

Why is critical thinking important

Critical thinking has many benefits for your personal and professional life. But there are a few key reasons why it’s important to you:

  • helps in decision making, reasoning and evaluating an argument,
  • helps to form own opinions on the subject and develop personality,
  • promotes the development of personality and self-confidence,
  • allows you to engage with others on a deeper and more intellectual level,
  • helps to improve and strengthen working relationships,
  • allows you to evaluate your own work to identify ways to improve its quality and effectiveness,
  • promotes the development of comprehension skills.

Not to forget that this type of thinking will get you much better results at work. You’ll also save a lot of time that you would otherwise spend on lengthy explanations of your point of view or trying to understand your colleagues, employers or clients. You will also be able to better assess the situation, solve the problem and come up with an adequate and effective solution.

How to learn to think critically

Unfortunately, not everyone is born with critical thinking skills. Some have to learn this skill. Then, once you’ve mastered the basics, you can improve the thinking activities and focus on using them in practice.

There are several steps you will encounter when learning the basics of critical thinking:

  1. Identify the problem – at the beginning you need to identify the problem or issue you are facing. Be specific and avoid vagueness. An imprecise question or issue will cause you not to get to the result, or you will get to the result, but it will not be sufficient.
  2. Organize the information – when you want to deal with a specific problem or question, find all the information about it. Use verified sources and make sure you have all angles of view covered. Don’t forget that one opinion won’t be enough. When thinking critically, you must not dismiss other possibilities in advance.
  3. Analyse data and sources – as you collect data and look for sources, you’ll find that you have a lot of it. In order not to lose your logic and to be able to make sense of a lot of information, start sorting it. Analyse them carefully and discard the ones that are not reliable. Avoid those with insufficient data.
  4. Prioritize the data – you’ve sorted the non-essential sources and now you can get on with the actual organizing and sorting. Some data are more important than others. Therefore, put them in a reasonable and appropriate order so that you are familiar with them and can return to them at any time.
  5. Make a decision – after studying all the data, you need to proceed to the main step, i.e. to make a decision. Think carefully about your conclusions and compare all the pros and cons. Try to draw a conclusion that is unbiased and supported by verified facts.
  6. Present your final decision – when you are firmly decided and you know your decision is the right one, present it to others. Don’t forget to speak confidently, be polite and considerate of others’ opinions.
Recommend
We recommend:

Your final decision should be final, but keep an open mind. Remember that there is a wealth of information out there. You never know if you’ve overlooked something. If the other side has better arguments or new data, listen to them. Consider whether your position is correct, and be prepared to change it if necessary.

How to improve critical thinking

Developing critical thinking skills is very important, especially if you don’t want to stagnate. There are several ways to do it and you can try many of them. Some ways will suit you more, others less. Don’t be discouraged and work actively to improve your critical thinking. You will feel its benefits in your professional and private life.

Don’t rush into a decision

Critical thinking is the process of analyzing data, sorting and classifying it. It is not a matter of a few minutes. So don’t rush into a decision. Give yourself plenty of time and allow all the thoughts to run through your head. This is the only way to avoid missing important information and relevant conclusions.

When thinking critically, it is good to be still and quiet. Don’t let anyone disturb you and certainly don’t let your surroundings influence you. A colleague, acquaintance or family member may have a completely different view of the situation. But it should not affect your judgement or decision.

You don't need much to develop critical thinking
An open mind will help open up new perspectives and help develop critical thinking.

Find out how you think about problems

Identify and evaluate your thought operations. It is the way you receive and process information. For some it is better to listen, for others the text is enough. Don’t forget the actual reaction to each fact. For more emotionally based people it is characteristic that they react much more strongly and intensely. In such cases, it is necessary to remain calm.

Being a critical thinker means that you are aware of your own biases and shortcomings. You are also aware of how these imperfections affect your solutions and decisions. So try to fight them and actively develop your critical thinking. This will also help you in evaluating possible solutions, how to deal with your prejudices or how to work on your own negative qualities in order to move forward as a person.

Recommend
We recommend:

To achieve more objective results, forget all your biases when thinking critically. If you find this difficult, consider asking a colleague for help.

Develop your imagination and creative thinking

Creative thinking and creativity are also very much involved in the whole process. It is important to be able to imagine all the possible outcomes of a situation. It is also directly linked to foresight, which allows you to anticipate what reactions your actions and decisions will provoke in others. From that you can deduce whether they are correct or not.

Know your values

Based on your values, you’ll know what you’re inclined towards and what to look out for. You will avoid subjective opinions and missing out on certain points of view. Every critical thinker needs to be careful about their own values and preferences. It could automatically favour them, which would have a negative impact on the final decision.

An open mind and the right questions will help

If you are unsure about something or need clarification, please ask. You can ask a colleague or supervisor. You can also ask it of yourself and then look for answers on the internet and in books. Another option is online forums. You never know if a complete stranger will help you with your task. Try all the possibilities to get closer to your goal and expand your skills and knowledge. An open mind is important in expanding knowledge.

You can also contribute to the development of critical thinking

Critical thinking is important not only for work but also for personal life. It enables you to make the right choices and come to the necessary conclusions. Regardless of whether you were born with critical thinking or had to learn it, don’t forget to develop it. There are several ways to do this and it’s up to you which one you choose.

Practice these kinds of thinking and maybe thanks to them, you will be able to get your dream job, for example at msg life Slovakia. Critical thinking will come in handy in a number of positions. So take a look at our employee benefits and job offers requirements and join us today.

Why emotional intelligence in the workplace is so important

Emotional intelligence is increasingly in demand in the business world. This is a key trait that allows a person not only to identify their emotions, but also to recognize the feelings of others. This contributes to a harmonious working environment and increases the respect between colleagues. But that’s not all. Emotional intelligence also brings a number of other benefits. Which benefits we talk about ?

What is EQ emotional intelligence?

Emotional intelligence, also known as EQ, is the ability to identify, understand, evaluate and manage one’s emotions and the emotions of others. People who have it are empathetic and know how others feel in different situations. At the same time, they know themselves and their feelings very well. They understand how they can affect their loved ones or colleagues and why they should not let their emotions run free.

People with high emotional intelligence are literally masters at controlling their emotions. In stressful situations, they do not panic, but handle them calmly, thus reassuring themselves and those around them. In addition, they are excellent decision makers, take constructive criticism well and know how to use it to improve themselves.

An IT worker writes down his day's work in a diary
It is important to constantly improve emotional intelligence

Simply put, people with high EQ know themselves perfectly well and know that each person is different and expresses their feelings in a different way. This is doubly true in the workplace sphere, which is highly competitive.

Did you know that…

… people with high emotional intelligence tend to be successful in all areas of life? This is mainly because they are empathetic and understanding, which makes almost everyone like them. If they ever need help or advice, there will always be someone willing to provide it.

5 elements defining emotional intelligence

According to American psychologist Daniel Goleman, there are five elements that define emotional intelligence. They are:

Confidence

A high level of emotional intelligence usually brings high self-esteem. However, people with high EQ are not arrogant or conceited. On the contrary, thanks to their higher self-esteem, they are able to calm their surroundings in stressful situations. This ensures a smooth workflow at all times, leading to efficient solutions and the best possible work results.

Healthy self-esteem allows for better control of emotions and does not allow feelings to get out of control. People with high EQ are aware of their strengths and weaknesses and are constantly working on them. Regular improvement can ultimately be noticed by a manager or boss.

Emotional intelligence and self-esteem improving activities

Wondering how to improve your self-esteem and increase your emotional intelligence? Experts recommend these two tricks:

  • Keep a journal – it can be paper or electronic. Write down each situation and how you acted during it. The more details you write, the better. So don’t be afraid to include how you felt after a certain decision, or what you expected to feel but didn’t. Always set aside some time at the end of the week to look at it and read it. Find out what can be improved and what you need to work on more. But then don’t forget to praise yourself for the things you’ve done. Keep track of your progress and enjoy the little things. Because those are the ones that move you forward the most.
  • Observe yourself – have you been in a situation where your self-confidence was at an all-time low? Ask yourself why something like this happened. Who or what was behind the fact that you didn’t feel confident? When you find the source of what is lowering your self-esteem, you will be able to fight it.

Self-control

Controlling your own emotions is sometimes more difficult than it seems. In escalated situations, many are guided by these feelings , which promotes confusion and tension. However, people with emotional intelligence do not give free rein to their feelings, at least not at work. They keep them in check, which helps them clear their minds and think of solutions to individual complications.

People with EQ firstly think and then act. They accept change easily and can say no if something doesn’t suit them. They are not jealous or full of anger. They also avoid impulsive and irresponsible decisions that could put them in uncomfortable situations.

How to improve self-control?

Self-control is a key quality that prevents you from shouting at someone and saying something to them that would make you feel sorry for them. But how to improve it? Use these tips:

  • Find out your personal values – to start with, set values that you will use to make decisions and evaluate situations. What is the most important for you? What are you definitely not going to compromise on? Set your values within your work area according to your beliefs and the company that employs you.
  • Slow down – instead of reacting immediately, slow down. Think about your answer or what you want to do. Are you really not going to regret it later? Will you reaction have a positive impact on colleagues or the task you are currently working on? If not, change your reaction. Try to think not only about your feelings, but also about how others will feel.
  • Don’t be afraid to admit you’re wrong – people aren’t perfect, so don’t unnecessarily punish yourself for mistakes. Accept them, learn from them, but don’t waste your time wondering what you could have done better. You cannot go back to the past, and such reflections will only waste time that could be spent on much better and more important things.
  • Keep working on yourself – keep practicing your self-control. Notice how you react to different situations and see if there’s something you could do next time to get even better results or feedback from colleagues. Emotional intelligence books, videos and tests on the internet can also help you with your training.

Motivation

Persons with high emotional intelligence are productive and motivated. They know that quick and immediate results usually do not bring long-term success. They also like to work on themselves, love a challenge and are not afraid to take a riskier but well thought out step into the unknown.

Recommend
We recommend:

Having a high EQ does not necessarily mean that someone is always highly motivated. Everyone feels unproductive sometimes and needs a break.

How to improve motivation?

You can improve your motivation with a few proven tips:

  • Think about why you do your job – remind yourself why you really enjoy the work you do. Remember the enthusiasm with which you entered it and what drove you during this time. If you find that you’ve changed over time and you just don’t enjoy your job anymore, consider changing it. There are many interesting job offers available today. For example, you can become an IT Project Manager Junior.
  • Don’t forget to rest – motivation levels usually drop when a person is tired. So think about regular rest and getting enough sleep.

Empathy

Empathy is a key element of emotional intelligence. It allows you to identify the needs and wants of others without them telling you anything. It prevents people from judging others and from forming various stereotypical prejudices.

The ability to empathize should be possessed not only by every ordinary employee, but also by the manager, supervisor or boss. They will better understand the actions of their subordinates and resolve minor and major conflicts in the workplace more quickly.

How to improve empathy?

You can use these tips to improve your empathy:

  • Watch body language and facial expressions – people may not say directly how they feel. Many times their facial expression or attitude will say it for them. Learn to recognize what the different attitudes and expressions mean and observe them the next time you interact with the colleague.
  • Try to empathize with the other person’s feelings – imagine you are in that person’s shoes, experiencing what they are experiencing. How would you feel? What would you do to make those feelings go away or change?

Social skills

People with high EQ are team players. For them, the success of the whole team is more important than their own. In addition, they are known for being able to communicate perfectly with others, listen to them and provide the necessary help. Colleagues therefore like them very much and seek their company.

How to improve social skills?

Social skills are key at work. How to improve them? Use this advice:

  • Listen to others – when having a conversation, people often don’t listen to the other person. They are rather thinking about what they will say as a response. Communication is thus not effective and many times not even pleasant. If you want others to like you, be genuinely interested in what they say. Find out more details about what they’re saying and show that you are listening everything they tell you.
  • Learn new techniques – there are now many emotional intelligence books, courses and videos available to help you learn a variety of new techniques to improve your social skills.

Why is emotional intelligence in a workplace so important?

EQ in the workplace is important for several reasons. These include:

  • It promotes good relationships workplace bullying or various other problems are nothing new. However, employees with high levels of emotional intelligence will not stoop to such behaviour. They can get along well with others, preventing a toxic environment that is impossible to work in.
  • It enables employees to perform much better – people with high EQ are motivated and constantly strive to improve. In this way, they are able to perform better and receive higher financial rewards or promotions.
  • It enables team leaders to make better decisions – managers or business owners with high EQ are able to keep their emotions in check and find solutions calmly and without stress in tense situations. They know that shouting at others or panicking is pointless.
  • It enables managers to understand their subordinates – each person has different needs and ideas. Managers need to understand this in order to be able to properly assign subordinates and match them with work tasks. Otherwise, not only the employees themselves will suffer, but also the whole team. The work will not run smoothly and the results will not reach the desired level.

Emotional intelligence books

Emotional intelligence is a key element for developing soft skills. You can improve it in a variety of ways, with books being one of the most popular. This topic has been the main focus of foreign authors who know the importance of effective communication, empathy and many other qualities related to EQ.

So which books should you reach for?

  • Emotional Intelligence – Daniel Goleman,
  • The Real-World Guide to Emotional Intelligence – Justin Bariso,
  • Think Faster, Talk Smarter – Matt Abrahams,
  • Master Your Emotions: Develop Emotional Intelligence and Discover the Essential Rules of When and How to Control Your Feelings – Eric Robertson,
  • Read People Like a Book – Patrick King.

Emotional intelligence EQ test

The American psychologist Daniel Goleman created a practical test of emotional intelligence that can be found on many websites today. It is so popular that it has its own Slovak version.

You don’t need to do any additional studying to complete the test, as the questions don’t have one right answer. They are used to analyse your personality and find out what your EQ level is. Therefore, answer them truthfully and honestly.

Emotional intelligence in the workplace is a key

Emotional intelligence is a quality you should not lack. It will allow you to achieve better results and continuously move up. It can also help you in your job search. Level up your emotional intelligence and get a great job, a variety of employee benefits and colleagues you’ll get along with.

Staff selection methods you may encounter

Staff selection methods vary depending on the company and its human resources department. However, most companies routinely use a few proven methods that are reliable and effective. Which one are they and what is their characteristic?

Who is in charge of staff selection?

Before we mention the different methods of selecting employees, it is important to know who is in charge of the whole process and who you may encounter.

The likelihood of being asked questions by the owner in an interview at a large company is very low. In companies with hundreds or thousands of employees, where job interviews are held regularly, special staff is dedicated to this work. These are HR specialists from the HR department.

HR professionals have the experience and often the training to be able to determine your feelings based on small details such as gesticulation. They are thus invaluable helpers for employers.

The way HR professionals work varies. However, they usually use a number of proven methods that, if you’ve done any interviews, you’re at least partially familiar with. They use them to find out if you are the ideal candidate for the job and if you deserve the chance.

What staff selection methods we know?

Recruitment is a complex and complicated process that should be handled by a professional with experience. Such an expert knows what to look for when making a choice.

Most companies have an HR department, or human resources department, for finding and hiring new employees. The department uses a variety of methods to determine which job applicants are truly suitable and should be given a chance.

Several methods and techniques are used to select employees. In most cases, these methods are combined with each other to give recruiters the best possible results. Which methods are they and what should you prepare for if you are looking for a new job and going for a traditional or online interview?

Method no. 1: Studying the CV and cover letter

Your CV and, in some cases, your cover letter are the tools you use to respond to a job offer, they are also your business card and a tool to find a job. You can use them to introduce yourself to recruiters and present your education, qualities and also your acquired hard and soft skills from your previous working career.

Be careful when creating your CV. It’s not just your strengths that recruiters are interested in. In addition, they also look at the overall execution of the document. This means its editing, writing style, stylistics, grammar, text alignment, formatting, typos, etc.

You may think that these details are not important for your work, but why should you know stylistics if you are, for example, a Java programmer? The answer is quite simple. These basic qualities should be possessed by absolutely everyone, at least at a basic level, because they affect many other areas.

For example, a CV without typos and grammatical errors shows recruiters that you pay attention to detail and strive to get the best results.

But that’s not all in terms of details. Recruiters also watch your communication style, especially if it’s relevant to your job. For example, a salesperson or sales representative should be able to express themselves properly, should not use foul language or vulgarisms, and their speech should be pleasant and calm. This is the only way to convince a client to cooperate or a customer to buy a good or service.

Don’t forget the little things on your CV that may look innocent but are important. This mainly includes information on hobbies and free time activities. For example, if you are involved in team sports, HR staff may assume that you will be good at teamwork.

The same rules apply to the cover letter. At the same time, it is crucial to remember that you should invest enough time in writing it. Recruiters have a lot of experience with universal letters during the recruitment process. They know that candidates often want to simplify their response to an offer with a text they have downloaded from the internet, which is not positive in their eyes.

Make your cover letter count. Try to write it in an original way, but in such a way that it doesn’t feel inappropriate, isn’t too long and doesn’t contain unnecessary information that HR won’t be interested in. Try to answer questions like:

  • Why are you the ideal candidate?
  • What achievements have you made in your career?
  • How do you stand out compared to other applicants?
Did you know that…

panel interviews are becoming increasingly popular? This is an interview in which you talk to more than two HR representatives at the same time. They assess your strengths and weaknesses, how well you communicate, and so on.

Method no. 2: Verifying CV information

Applicants may include more information on their CV. To make sure it is really true, recruiters often check them. So don’t make things up as you write your CV or cover letter.

This applies not only to information that can be verified, such as education or previous work experience, but also to information that HR cannot 100% verify. This includes, for example, your hobbies or personality.

While qualities such as stress management or the ability to work under pressure sound great and can help you get a job, if you have to show them in practice and you don’t have them, there’ll be a problem.

Lying on a CV or cover letter is not the best way to get a desirable job position. Recruiters will find out that you’re not telling the truth, often at the interview. They just need a few well-asked questions.

The recruiter can verify the information that is on the CV
Recruiters often verify the information on a CV.

Method no. 3: Interview with the candidate

Recruitment cannot be done without an interview. Those who have impressed the recruiters and meet their requirements are invited to attend.

The length of the interview varies and usually lasts between 30 and 60 minutes. The interview is conducted by an HR professional who asks thoughtful questions to get to know the candidate. It verifies the information gathered from the CV or cover letter to see if he or she is really suitable for the job.

Interview questions from recruiters tend to be very similar within the same industry. But sometimes they can take you by surprise and you answer with something what you would not have imagined. That’s why it’s good to know how to prepare for a job interview and what to expect. On the topic of interviews, you can also read our article Preparing for an interview using ChatGTP.

Did you know that…

In addition to the questions a recruiter may ask you, there are also those that should be avoided. These include, for example, questions related to marital status, number of children, religion or nationality.

Preparing for the interview is also important because the recruiter will not be satisfied with superficial and general answers. On the contrary, they will expect you to respond based on your experience and the qualities you have presented in your CV.

The right self-presentation at an interview will help you impress HR staff and leave a good impression. This will make it more likely that you will be invited to the second round of the employee selection interview.

Method no. 4: Observation of non-verbal communication

Recruiters are not only interested in what you say, but also in your face, what you do with your hands or your body posture. These little details can tell a lot more about you than you think.

If you don’t want to make a bad impression, avoid exaggerated gesticulation, hair grabbing or foot tapping. You’d also do well if you study different movements or stances. For example, adjusting your hair or looking at the ground can indicate nervousness. A trembling voice or averting your eyes can symbolise lying.

Recommend
We recommend:

Pay attention to how you speak during the interview. Avoid using vulgar or ungrammatical language. Speak clearly and loudly enough. Maintain eye contact while speaking, and sit quietly in your seat.

Employee selection – Psychometric test and other methods of recruiters

When selecting new employees, recruiters also use various other, more practical methods. These include, for example, the creation of model situations or personality and psychometric tests. They measure your ability to speak up for yourself, help others, suggest solutions and so on.

Different methods may be used in the selection of employees
A recruiter may combine several methods when selecting employees.

Employee selection process at msg life Slovakia – how does it work?

Employee selection and HR management is different in every company. At msg life Slovakia, this process consists of several steps that are specifically tailored to our HR strategy and company culture.

Send us your CV

The very first step is up to you. If you are interested in a job offer, please respond by sending your CV. Simply attach it as an attachment to the contact form. If you’re interested in how to write a CV, read our article Skills and abilities on a CV.

What else should I attach besides my CV? Generally, nothing else is needed. However, if you have a cover letter, feel free to send that as well. We’d love to find out more interesting information about you. However, we recommend you not to stretch it unnecessarily, so it won’t be tiring. Ideally, you’ll write a brief text introducing yourself and telling us why you’re the best candidate for the job.

We will then confirm receipt of your application by an automated email that will arrive in your inbox. That way, you’ll be sure your request has actually been sent and we’ll take a look at it shortly.

If we are interested in you, we will contact you

Once we receive your CV, we’ll go through it and see if you meet our requirements. If yes, we’ll give you a call, ask a few follow-up questions and set up an interview.

Have patience in this step and give us some time. We want to go through your CV thoroughly and consider everything carefully, so you may have to wait a few days to get a response. But don’t worry, we won’t forget you.

We’ll invite you for an interview

By phone or email, we agree on the date and format of the meeting, i.e. whether we will meet in person or online.

Then we’ll talk about other details, which vary depending on which job you’re interested in.

Your job at this step is to let them know if you can make the meeting. All you need is a short email stating, for example, “I confirm my attendance at the interview”.

Meeting – motivating employees in the company

We will meet and talk on the agreed date. You tell us more about yourself and your experience. We will introduce you to the company’s work processes, employee evaluation and employee benefits. We will also tell you more about the motivation of the employees in the company, the salary conditions and many other details.

The interview is the perfect time for your questions too. If something is not clear, don’t hesitate to ask. Our recruiters will be happy to explain everything to you.

Recommend
We recommend:

It is important to ask questions in an interview. It shows recruiters that you are listening to them and are interested in the company. However, you should prepare your questions in advance. Don’t expect them to spring to mind during the interview. Otherwise, you may not know what to say when it comes to asking questions.

We’ll let you know how we decided

Feedback after the interview is a matter of course with us. We will always tell you how we decided. If we are interested in you and you are a suitable candidate, we will be happy to invite you to the next round of the selection process.

We’ll give you constructive feedback at every stage of the selection process. At the same time, we appreciate your effort and will do our best to make this experience move your career forward.

Congratulations.

If you’ve made it this far, a contract is on the way. To make sure everything goes smoothly and as it should, we’ll give you a call to arrange a start date and other details.

How to prepare for a job interview? With us, you can handle it with ease.

The search for a new job has several stages. One of them is the interview, which is usually not very popular among applicants. Stress and tension can often be overwhelming. But you can improve and simplify the whole situation. You just need to prepare properly and leave nothing to chance. Do you know the basic interview questions? This is the only way to make sure you leave a good impression and provide appropriate answers to all questions. How to prepare for an interview? We have some practical job interview tips for you.

Update your CV

To get a job interview, you need to impress with your CV. A CV is like your social media profile. It represents you without the company knowing who you are. Based on the information the recruiter gets from it, they can form their opinion about you. They find out if you’re the right person for the job offer, or should invite someone with more experience or a different educational background to the interview.

Since your CV is a showcase of your work history and other data, it has to look like one. Make sure it contains all the information at the beginning. If it’s missing something, fill it in and update it. Be sure to include every job title and all your skills. How to do it, we summarized in the article Skills and abilities on your CV.

Graphic design is also important. It may not decide whether you get the job or not, but it can be interesting for the employer. Your CV can stand out from dozens or hundreds of others. Elegant and simple design looks the best. Avoid multiple garish and chaotic combinations of colours and fonts.

The job applicant holds a paper in his hand and prepares for the interview
Impress at every interview with the right preparation.

Grammar and stylistics should not be forgotten either. If there are too many mistakes on your CV, it can put employers off, no matter what job you want to do. You don’t have to apply for the position of editor or editor-in-chief. Everyone should know the basic rules of spelling.

Expert advice

Do you have problems with Slovak and don’t know if you made mistakes in your CV? Have someone in the area read it, or use the services of professional proofreaders. That way you’ll be sure your CV is in order and represents you well.

Send CV correctly

It may not be important to you, but the actual sending of the CV is key. Many people make the mistake of not filling out the subject line. Such e-mails end up in spam or are not even opened by HR. They don’t look professional and are definitely not a good start for a candidate.

Next, focus on the content of the email. For most, a CV is the most important thing, but it needs an introduction. Say hello, introduce yourself and say that you are interested in the job offer. Then don’t forget to refer to the CV in the attachment and say goodbye.

Send your CV in PDF or Word. These are the most versatile formats. Every operating system can open them. Choose the classic and most used fonts to open to absolutely everyone. Arial, Times New Roman or Calibri in sizes 11 and 12 are a safe bet.

When sending an email, you’ll do well to choose your work email inbox. You can also choose a personal email, but it should include your full name or at least your initials. Addresses with nicknames do not look professional. Of course, it’s just a small thing, but use these small things to build your success on them.

Provide only truthful information

Your CV must include your experience, knowledge and work history. It is true that more experience can make you more interesting in the eyes of a recruiter. Your resume will stand out from the pile of others. But be careful not to overdo it. Even the biggest little thing, like a higher language level, will reveal itself over time. Usually right at the interview.

Lying will get you nowhere. It might help you get an interview, but that’s where you’ll end up. An experienced recruiter knows the tricks and ways to find out if information about you is really true. So be careful what you put on your CV. Lying is worse than the fact that you’re a level or two down.

Get it right from the start. If you want to get better at something, take a course. Don’t give false information. It’s useless.

You’re not just writing a CV for the recruiter, you’re also writing one for yourself. You update and recap everything you want to emphasise in the interview. It’s another way to prepare for a job interview and to be successful in it. The CV always determines the course of the meeting and the questions often asked in the interview are based on the CV. The more details you give, the fewer inconsistencies in communication there will be. At the same time, these basic points allow you to think about what questions to ask in a job interview. Pick up something you missed in your previous job and ask if you’ll find it in this one.

Remember to behave appropriately

Your resume can be as good as it is, but if you can’t behave, you won’t get the job. Late replies to emails or failure to communicate politely is a big negative. Make sure you get the structure of your email right before you send your CV. Find out what it should look like.

As a rule, a greeting and an address must not be missing at the beginning. Next, write down what you need. Remember that you must use capital letters for words like Mr., Mrs., Ms. End the email with “thank you”, say goodbye and include your last name.

Be punctual

One of the little things that doesn’t work well is tardiness. Of course, sometimes it happens that a person is not to blame for being late. In most cases, however, the delay is because they left home late or stopped somewhere.

Arrive at least 10 minutes early for the job interview. Check in at reception and wait. It’s better to arrive early and wait a while than to be late.

In case of an online interview, please allow for technical problems. Test beforehand to see if the connection link works. See if the app works for you. If you’ve never worked with it, install it and go through the basic functions. Avoiding similar complications will make the interview process easier.

Don’t forget to set aside enough time. How long does the interview take? Sometimes thirty minutes will be enough, other times it can stretch to two hours. It all depends on how the job interview goes, whether it is a first round, whether there is a test involved and so on. Nowhere is it specified exactly how a job interview is conducted, so if you set aside enough time, you can pass the interview without stress.

Expert advice

Do you live in a house or apartment with your family? Don’t forget to wear headphones at the interview. They’ll ensure you hear the recruiter well. Plus, they won’t hear what’s going on behind the door in the other room.

Choose the right place

Use this point when the interview is online. As a candidate, you need to find a place where it is quiet and peaceful. Also make sure you have a good internet connection and nothing is disturbing you.

Many people are trying to work hard, so they go to coworking spaces or coffee shops. The problem with these places is that there’s a lot of other people and hustle and bustle around you. So you can’t focus well on individual questions from the recruiter.

Some cafés do not have a stable internet connection. Many other computers and mobile phones are connected to it. Online interviewing can cut in and out because of this. Make sure nothing like that happens. Stay at home where you have everything you need. You’ll be sure that nothing will go wrong and it won’t negatively affect the job interview.

Job interview dress

The recruiter will especially notice your outfit when you come in for a personal interview. You should choose formal clothes. Avoid ripped jeans and loose sweatshirts. What to wear to a job interview? A shirt and smart trousers will be the right choice.

When interviewing online, think especially about your upper clothing. You don’t have to overdo it, but it’s good to wear something that looks good and you feel comfortable in. Knowing how to dress for a job interview can form a significant part of how to succeed at an interview.

How to prepare for an interview

At this point, the situation you have been waiting for so long is already occurring. So the question may arise: how to prepare for a job interview? What else to study? What are the correct answers to the interview questions? Alternatively, what to ask at the interview?

It’s only natural to write to multiple companies and interview for jobs with multiple companies when you’re looking for a job. After all, the more emails you send out, the better your chances of getting a job. But with many different job offers, you may not remember all the details. And one of the most common interview questions (and also the most difficult ones) is why you are the right person for the job.

Therefore, find out about your chosen job before the interview. You should find it in the job offer itself. Write down the key points and then use them in the interview. Show that you’re genuinely interested in the job and ready to get started.

In addition to the job title, it’s a good idea to find out about the company offering the job. Find information about company culture or products and services. If it has its projects posted, check those out as well. Think about why you want to work for the company and what you find most interesting about it. Develop a tactic for answering interview questions.

Many times you get a question related to the company in a job interview. Why are you interested in the offer? What do you like about the company? The more you say, the better for you. If you say some interesting information, you will get good points. You show that you really took the time to find out additional information. It’s one more way to impress in an interview.

How to succeed at a job interview

How to behave in an interview? Mood and how you come across are essential in a job interview. Try to calm yourself down, don’t get too nervous and stressed. Put on a smile and be positive. Be polite and courteous. Don’t jump in, answer questions honestly and try to represent yourself and your work experience correctly.

Make jokes when the situation allows, but don’t overdo it. A joke can lighten the mood, but it doesn’t always fit. It is very much appreciated if you ask some questions yourself to indicate more interest in the job. What questions to ask at the interview? Although the interview questions and answers don’t have clear-cut rules, be sure to ask about the job description, career development or training opportunities.

Every recruiter appreciates questions from the candidate during the job interview. Don’t hesitate to ask how the second round of interviews goes. You may be wondering how to ask about the outcome of the interview. Finally, politely ask the recruiter if they think you are suitable for the role and express your belief that you will be part of the shortlist. There is no exact guide on how to ask interview questions, but it’s always better if you ask some.

There are also no awkward or unusual interview questions. There is only an unprepared candidate.

Your salary expectations

The job offer often gives only approximate salary information. Either it is a range or just an estimated amount. It all depends on the candidate’s experience and expectations. When it comes to this question, stay within that range. The final amount must depend on your experience. Definitely don’t underestimate yourself, it’s also important to know how to sell yourself in an interview. So think it through beforehand. This is one of the most common questions in the interview.
