Keyboard shortcuts: 60+ of the most used keyboard shortcuts for Windows and Mac to make your job easier

Want to make your life a lot easier? Use keyboard shortcuts! They’re practical and you’re guaranteed to use them when you’re working on your computer. There are times when it’s easier to click a few keys on a keyboard than to move the mouse. Here’s a selection of shortcuts that are perfect for everyday PC work and will save you time. Which ones do you know?

1. Close the window/tab in the operating system or browser

Windows: Ctrl+W,

Mac: ⌘Cmd+W

A handy keyboard shortcut closes the currently open window, not the entire program. This means that if you have different documents or pages open on the Internet, only the one you use this “command” on will close.

2. To reopen a recently closed tab in the browser

Windows: Ctrl+⇧Shift+T,

Mac: ⌘Cmd+⇧Shift+T

I’m sure this has happened to you a few times. You accidentally closed the card you needed to have open. Very annoying, isn’t it? Don’t worry, though. Browsers have a great feature that lets you find the last tab you closed and easily reopen it.

A handy keyboard shortcut does it for you. If you have closed more than one tab, continue clicking the T key to open all tabs in the order you closed them.

3. Switch between tabs in the browser

Windows: Ctrl+PageUp/PageDown,

Mac: ⌘Cmd+Opt+←/→ (Firefox and Chrome); ⌘Cmd+Shift+←/→ (Safari)

You can use the Tab key instead of the PageUp and PageDown keys for this purpose, but the last 2 keys will allow you to cycle in either direction. PageUp takes you to the tabs on the left and PageDown takes you to the tabs on the right.

4. Minimize/maximize window

Windows: Alt+Space+N (minimize)/Alt+Space+X (maximize),

Mac: ⌘Cmd+M/⌘Cmd+L

There are several shortcuts to minimize and maximize windows. In this case, these are the most basic keyboard shortcuts, which are also the most used.

You can also write a Word document and listen to music in a music player at the same time, with all the above windows open. If you need to get to a particular icon or file on your desktop, you don’t have to minimize each window separately. Just use this shortcut to go straight to the desktop. At the same time, each open window is minimized to the taskbar.

All Japanese keyboards require switching between Latin/Roman letters (called rōmaji) and Japanese characters (called hiragana and kana).

10. Find and Replace

Windows: Ctrl+H,

Mac: ⌘Cmd+Shift+F

A handy keyboard shortcut is used to replace a word in a text document with another word. If you want to edit the text and replace a word, phrase or sentence, enter a keyword in the search box and replace it with another.

If a web browser is open, clicking on this shortcut will display a history of the pages you have viewed on the site.

11. Scroll to the beginning or to the end

Windows: Home/End,

Mac: ⌘Cmd+←/→

Some of the keyboard shortcuts you need to know about includes this one. It is particularly useful on the web. Why is it so? It will take you to the top or bottom of the open web page. When you process text in Word, it places you at the beginning or end of the current line.

Remote work – what are the biggest advantages?

Working from home office or having a full remote job, is very popular nowadays. Both employees and employers tend to be in favour of it. No wonder. As well as it is bringing a degree of freedom, it can save time, energy and even costs. While the company saves on work space, the employee saves on not having to travel to the office. What is working from home like and what are its biggest advantages?

Remote work meaning

If you’re asking what a home office is, the answer is quite simple. Home office, also known as remote working, is a type of work that you do directly from home. It doesn’t tie you to one workplace where you have to commute regularly.

Interesting fact is, that if you were interested in knowing what a home office is a few years ago, you would most likely have encountered that the term was only associated with creative jobs that one did for a living.

There were several reasons why home office work was not so widespread. These include in particular the fact that it was not defined in the Labour Code, so many people did not even know it. Large, medium or small companies did not provide it to their employees.

Home office rules for employees

But the question still remains, what are the principles of home office work? To begin with, there are no fixed home office rules. Every job is different and requires a different approach. It is therefore important to agree with all the details with your employer, ideally it should also be in your employment contract.

However, working from home has a few universal principles that you’ll encounter almost everywhere. These include:

  • Observance of working hours – here you may encounter strict working hours, e.g. from 8 AM to 16 PM, , or the number of hours you have to work on a given day, but it’s up to you when you do so. The second type of home office work is more benevolent, but you’ll encounter it less often than the first.
  • Marking of the attendence – some employers may require you to keep a record of when you start and finish work, breaks and various other details, even if you are a full-time remote worker.
  • Health and safety compliance – if you have to comply with health and safety at work, you need to do that also at home.

It’s also a good idea to follow practical recommendations that make working from a home office more productive. These include:

  • Create a comfortable working environment – set aside a room for your home office or at least an empty corner in your living room or bedroom where you can concentrate. Next, be sure to get an ergonomic chair and a large enough desk to work at. Various accessories such as notice boards, shelves, storage boxes and the like can also help you increase productivity.
  • Think about regular breaks – working from home requires breaks so you can focus well. So once in a while, get up from your desk and walk around the house, or go outside for a while.
  • Plan your work tasks well – with a full-time remote job, your day is firmly in your hands, so plan your day well so you can get everything you need to get done during the day.
  • Don’t do everything yourself – remember that working from a home office doesn’t mean you have to do everything yourself. On the contrary. When you need advice, don’t hesitate to contact your colleagues.

If you are familiar with the legal principles governing working from home, you should be aware that hybrid working is slightly different. As its rules are not defined in the Labour Code, you must agree them with your employer in an internal regulation. This will help you avoid unnecessary complications and problems.

Home office work – its popularity increased especially during the pandemic

The popularity of working from a home office has grown very slowly. Companies did not want to provide it to employees because they felt they would not have control over them. In addition, some companies would have to change their established processes due to part-time or full-time remote working, which would cost both time and money.

But everything changed in 2020, when the world was hit by a coronavirus pandemic. It has forced us to rethink and change many things, including the way we work. Companies have made it possible for employees to perform their duties remotely, making working from the home office a common standard.

When pandemic was over and things returned to normal, many have returned to their offices. However, most employers still allow remote work at least a few times a month.

Home office in Slovakia

Home office in Slovakia is now a common standard. It is provided by both smaller and larger companies. Usually you’ll encounter a hybrid type of work, but some employers have switched to full-time remote.

When we look at jobs that you can do from your home office in Slovakia, IT and creative fields are the most prevalent, i.e. programmers, developers, graphic designers, marketers or copywriters.

Did you know that…

Can’t find a remote job in Slovakia? Try searching for “work from home Slovakia”, “home office Slovakia”, or similar phrases. If you’re based in Bratislava, try searching for “home office Bratislava” – you’re bound to find at least one job.

Home office from abroad

Home office from abroad attracts especially travel lovers. If this is something you would like to do, keep in mind that this style of work will only be possible with full remote. With a hybrid work, you have to stay in one place because you have to go to the office regularly.

In addition, pay attention to the employment contract itself. When travelling, especially to time-shifted countries, it is ideal to agree with your employer only on the number of hours you have to work, not on the exact hours, for example from 8 AM to 4 PM. Such a condition could complicate things for you.

Full remote work

Full remote refers to the type of work where you work 100% remotely. This means that you do not go to the office or other premises in the employer’s company as in the hybrid alternative. This way of working gives you a high degree of freedom, because you don’t have to do it from home, but from a completely different city or even country.

Full-time remote is provided by companies only occasionally. Typically, you’ll see a hybrid type of work that benefits from both on-site and home office work.

Full remote work and its pitfalls

Occasional home office or having a full remote work looks tempting and good at first sight. Many people associate it with a great deal of freedom that they do not have in their normal workplace.

Of course, working in a home office will give you more freedom, but there are also certain rules you have to follow. In addition, when you start working from home, you will find it difficult to separate your personal and professional life.

Other pitfalls of working from home, whether IT or other work, include more demanding concentration. This applies to anyone who does not live alone. Other people at home will, like you, use rooms, talk and make the usual noises, such as walk louder, cough, open cupboards and so on. They can cause a constant distraction.

Think about these pitfalls when choosing a job as much as the benefits or rules of a home office. This avoids having too high expectations that could disappoint you later.

Before you decide to work full remote, be sure to find out the advantages and disadvantages of this type of work.

Full remote vs. hybrid

When someone mentions the term “remote working” or “home office”, most people think of performing work tasks from home. However, the truth is that working from home is divided into two categories, namely full remote and hybrid. What are the differences between them?

Full remote

● You only work remotely,

● You do not visit the employer’s office or other premises,

● You have a high degree of freedom,

● You can work from anywhere, not just from home,

Job offers on full remote are not as widespread as in the case of hybrid.

Hybrid

● You work from home a few days a month and on other days you are in the office or other premises of your employer,

● you have less freedom,

● You can generally only do the work from home, co-working or a café (but not in another country),

● Job offers for hybrid work are currently more widespread than for full remote.

Home office advantages

The benefits of a home office are various. Main advantages include:

  • Freedom – home office gives you a certain amount of freedom. You can adapt your working day to your needs.
  • Saving time and money – home office jobs are great in that you don’t have to commute anywhere, saving you time and money.
  • A wide range of options – work from home is now offered by companies in many fields. For example, IT support in the home office or other IT professions are popular. Java developer, graphic designers, journalists, social media specialists and many others can also do full remote.
  • Employee benefits – Most employers provide the same or similar benefits to home office employees as for those who work in offices or other premises of the company.
  • Ability to work from different locations – in the case of hybrid style you can work from home, cafe or co-working space. On the other hand, with full remote you have the option to perform individual tasks from another country.

Home office disadvantages

You already know the benefits of a home office. However, you should also know its disadvantages. These include:

  • Multi-tasking – You may be tempted by a number of other responsibilities while working from home, such as cooking, cleaning or laundry. However, constantly leaving your desk is not exactly ideal. This will negatively affect your concentration and cause you to complete fewer tasks.
  • Difficulty concentrating – your concentration may be disturbed by animals or other people in the house or apartment talking or doing something.
  • Lack of communication with colleagues – a home office job isolates you from your team and can leave you alone most of the day. This can be uncomfortable for some extroverted personalities.
  • Time management – home office, working from home is not suitable for those who don’t like to plan and manage their time. You’ll need to schedule your individual tasks so that you can get everything done and still deliver quality outputs.

How to prepare for job interview with ChatGPT 4

Preparing for the interview is key. It ensures, that recruiters don’t surprise you with any questions. Plus, you’ll know how the whole process works and what to avoid so you don’t miss out on the chance to land your dream job. Preparing for a job interview is not difficult. Now that artificial intelligence (AI) is on the rise, you can make it even easier. How does AI work and how to use it to your advantage?

What is artificial intelligence?

Artificial intelligence (AI) represents the ability of a device to display human-like characteristics. These skills include, for example, thinking, planning, creating or learning. Devices that have artificial intelligence can solve different problems and distinguish the environment they are in. They do so on the basis of the information available to them, and the more information they have at their disposal, the better and more relevant the information they can provide. Artificial intelligence is nothing new, but it’s become much more popular in late 2022. The reason for this was the launch of ChatGPT.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT stands for “Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer”. It is a language model based on machine learning. Its main function is to generate text responses to various questions or commands. The advantage of ChatGPT is that it works in multiple languages. In addition to English commands, you can also enter Slovak or Czech commands. ChatGPT has a specially modified algorithm that can also generate responses based on previous conversations. This means that the individual pieces of information build on each other and are continuous. You can use ChatGPT for almost anything. The only thing artificial intelligence won’t answer are questions:

  • violating ethical principles,
  • to which there is no clear answer,
  • predicting the future,
  • that require personal identification,

Preparing for the interview with ChatGPT online

ChatGPT is one of the most popular artificial intelligence tools today. No wonder. It’s easy to use, free and in Slovak language. With a huge amount of information, it can help you in a number of areas, including preparing for job interview. Have you decided to give ChatGPT a chance and prepare for your next job interviews with it? Then take advantage of our practical advice.

Browse individual job offers

Start the whole job search and interview preparation process by looking at individual job offers. Unfortunately, ChatGPT can’t help you here. You will have to visit the job portals yourself. Click on the ads you are interested in and read them in detail. You will find out if you are a good fit for the company as a candidate and if you are happy with the financial evaluation, employee benefits and so on. If so, respond to the offer as soon as possible.

Study the company information

In addition to the financial evaluation, benefits or home office, you should also be interested in the company itself. Find out more about it. Explore its history, values and achievements. You can find all this directly on their website. When a company is globally known and has a long history, artificial intelligence will know a lot about it. For example, you can order her: “Write me more about company xy” or “What do you know about company xy?” If you want to use some of this information in your cover letter or interview, check it out just to be sure. Artificial intelligence makes a lot of mistakes. It may inadvertently give you incorrect information that will make you look unprofessional to a potential employer.

Create your CV

To respond to any job offers that interest you, you need to create a CV. This step is very easy today, especially since there are many tools with pre-made templates. All you have to do is fill in your personal details, education, work experience and other details. You then save everything, download it and send it to your maybe future employer. If you don’t want to use pre-made forms, you can ask ChatGPT for help. All you have to do is type a command such as “Write me a sample resume” or just “Sample resume” into the command line and you’re done. The AI creates a template for you to copy into a document, fill in, download and send. Even if you give the AI the information it needs, such as your name, education and work experience, it will fill in the blanks for you. Read also our article Skills and abilities on the CV.

Write a cover letter

Many employers require a cover letter in addition to a CV. The aim is to show why you are interested in the job offer and why you are the best candidate. If you write it right, you can impress recruiters and ensure you get invited for a job interview. But how to write a concise and interesting cover letter that won’t get boring after a few sentences? Ask ChatGPT. Within seconds, artificial intelligence creates a universal text for you to type in, adding your personal details, achievements and reasons why you’re interested in the position. If you don’t want to rely on ChatGPT, see our previous article Job Cover Letter – Online Sample Download. And what commands do you need to give ChatGPT to write you the best cover letter? For example, try “Write me a sample cover letter” or “Write me an interesting cover letter”. For anyone in the IT field, the “Write me an IT cover letter” command is also worth a try.

In some situations, ChatGPT’s text can feel too universal, to the point of seeming machine-like. So, don’t be afraid to edit the text when transcribing it. This will make the text more personal to you.

Write a job application

If you need a cover letter or job application in addition to a cover letter, the process for writing one using ChatGPT is the same. Just type “Write me an application letter/ job application letter” and then edit the text. If you don’t want to use Chatgpt, see our article Job Application and Cover Letter – Sample.

Interview questions and answers for the employee

If your CV or cover letter catches the eye of a potential employer, they will invite you for an interview. In this interview you will talk about your experience, work goals, ideas, etc. This is the most important part of the whole job search process. Therefore, prepare well for it.(How to prepare for an interview you can read in our last article.) Think about what you will say about yourself when recruiters ask you to introduce yourself. Once you do, more questions will follow. There are a few that are repeated regularly. If you haven’t been to an interview before and don’t know what they are, or can’t remember, ask AI.. In case you are interested in the job of a Java developer, write AI, for example, the following command: “I have an interview for a Java developer job. What questions should I expect in the job interview?” The AI will list a few interview questions for you. If it seems short to you, tell it to continue. Do the questions seem too universal and imprecise to you? If you are interested in working for a large and international company, add it to the query and ask again. For example: “I have an interview for a Java developer position at XY company. What questions should I expect in a job interview?” The ChatGPT is likely to have sufficient information about the company, its goals and values to enable it to provide much more accurate and detailed questions.

Preparing for the interview – questions and answers for the employer

At the interview, you will be given the opportunity to ask the employer some questions that you should prepare in advance. Don’t expect them to cross your mind while you’re sitting in front of recruiters. By asking the right questions, you show that you are genuinely interested in the job and want to learn more about it. Recruiters most value questions related to the information they briefly mentioned earlier. This will confirm that you were actually listening to them and not thinking somewhere else. You can use ChatGPT to create some questions. You can tell the AI to say something like, “Write down questions I can ask the employer at XY”. If the AI does not know the company, rephrase the command to “Write down questions I can ask an IT employer.”

At the interview

While you can’t have your phone or laptop on to ask the AI what to do, you can prepare for it in advance. ChatGPT will give you practical advice on how to behave in front of recruiters and what you definitely shouldn’t do. Commands you can ask the AI on this topic include:

  • “What to avoid in a job interview for a Java developer job?”
  • “What are the most common mistakes job seekers make in job interviews?”
  • What is the job interview process?”

ChatGPT interview – more advice

AI can also help you with other tasks related to preparing for a job interview. For example, it will give you information on how you should dress if you are interested in Java developer jobs. Type “How do I dress for a job interview for a Java developer position?” in the command line and wait for advice. Other useful commands:

  • “What should I bring to a job interview?”
  • “How to make a good first impression?”
  • “What questions can’t a recruiter ask in a job interview?”

Check every text from AI

Wondering how to find a job you enjoy? The ChatGPT artificial intelligence will help you with the whole process, writing all the texts for you and preparing you for the employer’s questions. Remember, however, that while AI knows a lot, it is not 100% right. Make sure you check the texts it provided you with and that you plan to send, such as a cover letter. Check for grammatical or stylistic errors. Then, pay attention to the truthfulness of the information and other details. ChatGPT doesn’t know you. The things it writes are just general. If they don’t describe you, delete them from the text or replace them with others.

How else can ChatGPT help you?

ChatGPT is a practical tool that you can use in many areas. In addition to the application letter and cover letter, it can create many other interesting texts for you. It is ideal to use not only in the context of work, but also in personal life. However, artificial intelligence should be taken with a grain of salt. Never rely on it for 100%. Always check everything it says. This will avoid unnecessary problems and complications that it could cause you. If you’re interested in more articles about AI and ChatGPT, read also:
